Undetectable bottom- Negative top risk- No condom? Please help
« on: December 01, 2013, 12:28:53 pm »
Hey, I know this has definatly been written on and discussed before but  I just wanted to personally receive answers.
I was infected on July 2010 and had indeterminate results up until January of 2011... which was alittle weird I though, but not the point loll
Recently I was retested in Oct of 2012 and received a positive result. Viral Load 9000 CD4 around 530.....started taking Atripla and as of today I am undetectable and CD4 is 550. My question is I am in a monogamous relationship with my partner(he is top)...No STDs or STI's depending where you are from- I know there is a risk if we ever had unprotected sex( which I am not going to be doing because I truly care for him) if we DID have unprotected sex for 5-10 minutes with me as the bottom/receptive partner what would be the risk of him acquiring the infection....Last time I checked on November 3, I am undetectable with under 15 copies. I m sorry I am rambling I am just curious and new to all of this. I know there is a slight risk since I am still positive but what would be the chances if this happened. Thank you guys for everything.

Hello, and welcome to the forums!

As you will probably find by searching, there have been many discussions about this. The consensus seems to be that, in a mutually monogamous relationship where there are no other STDs or aggregious conditions in the rectum/anus that could potentially cause a temporary spike in viral load, an undetectable bottom is not going to infect a negative top.

This is full on anal sex without a condom, to completion.

I care very deeply for my boyfriend of two and a half years. We are monogamous. He is negative, and a top. I am a bottom who has been undetectable for years. We do not use condoms.

It's a choice we both made, based on careful consideration and analysis of the scientific data.

It's an incredibly intimate decision, and it absolutely depends on the trustworthiness of us both to remain free of other STDs and for me to religiously take my meds.

"Many people, especially in the gay community, turn to oral sex as a safer alternative in the age of AIDS. And with HIV rates rising, people need to remember that oral sex is safer sex. It's a reasonable alternative."

Thank you for your reply...It means a lot...I have done some research and most of it seems to be regarding "straight" couples so its alittle hard to try and compare ourselves lol... Thank you for your input honestly, I am new to all of this I am 21 and did not know I had even contracted HIV for 3 years. I care very much for this person as I truly fucked up and cheated on him in a one night stand and contracted the virus. After testing for 6 months with consecutive indeterminate results my doctor said I was fine and my bf tested negative so I felt relieved. We had unprotected since then with us both switching roles and I am completely thankful for him to still be negative and he has taken me back. It just goes to show how hard it is to actually aquire this. Like I said I am not going to make a habit out of it but just in the long run we do want to and are discussing marriage and I would like to have a child but that's much farther along lol... It wasn't until my dr said I should just get tested as a precaution that I actually found out... So for 3 years of our relationship we had no idea. I am amazed at how low my viral load was at the time we found out too and for atripla which has been a life saver. Congradulations on you as well. I never thought I would ever be in this situation but hey, who has? lol
We are completely monogamous and I get tested every 4 months and he does the same. It is a relief to hear that if we did decide for unprotected that he is not at a huge risk that was considered before. I feel bad I just keep typing but it helps me de-stress. I really have no one to talk to as my family actually makes fun of my condition. My bf and his family have been the ones to really stand behind me and I am so thankful. An example is actually yesterday after I got back from thanksgiving, my medicine which was supposed to be delivered was no where to be found and is lost, I looked everywhere and no one on my block has seen it, even the person who holds our mail. My family said well its not our problem u got this and my bf was the only one to actually say well if we cant get it back thru insurance I will find a way. Not really the point of this whole thing lol but real questions now

1) although there is a risk- is there any real way to know the risk( we don't really do anything crazy or rough during sex) without him using a condom?

2) would he need to take pep or prep for a single exposure of 5-10 minutes of unprotected anal sex with him as a negative top?

Anon,

Hey and I hear what your saying although my partner and I are positive I hope to offer some advice. While getting your check ups I would as to see if your dr can do an ANAL PAP this is to check for anything in your rectum. My partner didn't know but I take responsibility for having unprotected sexy ith him that he also had HPV and lesions. All since cleared up now we hope.

So if you can see if you can get that done

The PEP if your boyfriend has insurance then that may be an option but as JK said as lomg as you are on MEDS and no other STD/STI then you would have a risk albeit LOW there is always a risk. You and your partner have a good trust system.

If you ever want to talk we are all here. I don't really have many people to talk to other, my partner doesn't like talking about it, so feel free to PM me.
