Title: Vitamin Water
Post by: Queen Tokelove on July 31, 2007, 04:44:46 am
Has anyone tried vitamin water? The ones with the flavors, not sure who it is made by but tastes pretty good. Are there any benefits? I know one that I had was labeled "defense" so I was thinking it must target the immune system.

It's just as well that they call the stuff "vitamin water," as you're more likely to piss the vitamins away as fast as you take them in.  It's much cheaper and more effective to eat a balanced diet and pop an economical multivitamin pill.

Dunno. If it's a glass bottle, it might serve as a better defense against attackers than a PET bottle. More impressive, too.

Marketing gimmick for yuppies... though I did try some about 5 years ago.  Anyone with HIV should be at minimum taking a multivitamin each day in the first place.

I went to their website, and I couldn't find the amount of vitamin C, Zinc, etc.. they put in "Defense". Also their site is an extremely annoying Flash site that is not very common-user friendly.

Hi Queen~

I have tried Propel, not for the vitamin benefit, but more for the flavor when getting my daily water intake.  I have tried over the years and I simply cannot stomach a multi-vitamin.  I have a full stomach, etc. and those pills make me feel sick every time.  I know, I know, I need to bite the bullet and change my ways, but the nausea is awful!

Cindy,
There is a prenatal vitamin brand that I started taking that doesn't bother my stomach.  It's by a company called New Chapter Organics and the name of the vitamin is Perfect Prenatal.  I like it because it doesn't bother my stomach.  I'm not pregnant yet but I really like the vitamin.

Queen......for someone who is on food stamps...and I say this with all due respect...because Kurt is on a FIXED income .....you should NOT be buying any of that ridiculous crap labed:  WATER.  Really.  We have our PUR filter attached to our kichen sink faucet and thats all the purified water we need and anything else is just icing on the cake.  Kurt has a tendancy to like "Gator AID"...so we buy that in powdered form and he mixes his own.  Please dont let anyone sell you a bunch of crap that you pay more for than water out of the tap.  Just take your supplements every day and your are FINE !

"Vitamin Water" tastes good because it's loaded with sugar and artificial flavors. Very little vitamins, when compared to taking any one-a-day multivitamin. It's just a marketing gimmick. If you want something tasty and healthy go with any 100% juice, IMO. Regards, J.

Thanks for the advice, Cat.  I have always had trouble with those big vitamin pills!  I agree the water is a ripoff as far as being overpriced, but for me its my soda.  I am diabetic and can't have the suagr so it soothes my sweet tooth with the flavor.

I tend to agree with Bear.. see the news about Aquafina? Tap water for $2/bottle, uh. You're better off taking tap water with a filter & vitamins from a trustable source (no pun intended)..

Regarding the complaints about stomach irritation from vitamin pills, that effect is almost always due to "inactive" binders in the pill to which one is sensitive.  If one finds that a certain brand of vitamin pill causes nausea, the best thing to do for one's health would be to ask the maker for the list of binding agents used, along with the source of the agets (plant, animal, artifical) and avoid the plant and animal stuff in other brands.

The may seem like  a lot of work, but it will inform one about one's body, as well as help save money.

Cheers,
David

I tried the Vitamin water and it tastes pretty good. I use to drink Propel all the time but now I can't find any in the stores except for that nasty calcium kind. I did have a water filter before. I see that they got one now where you can add flavor to the filtered water. Anyone see this? I don't take any vitamins. I use to take vitamin E and fish oil pills but my doctor told me to stop. Like Moon, I am diabetic so I rarely drink juices and when I do it is usually orange juice because apple makes me go. Cranberry has me peeing all night long. And the orange juice helps when my sugar feels too low.

Ohla,
I have tried all kinds of water, but the one I really liked that didn't do much for vitamins, but did help hydrate me faster ( or at least feel that way), was Penta Water. It's super ridiculous expensive, and absolutely not worth buying. But I liked it.
Plain water is best, try to stick to natural foods and clean plain water. The less shit your liver has to process the better...

Cindy, I don't like to swallow those big horse pills either, so I try to get chewable. Maybe that might be an option for you and the upset stomach.

Keep eating your veggies, Infact I need some really good veggie receipes, anyone know of any? I have not one but two picky eaters ( both boys) in the house.

Much love,
Nicole

What do you mean by natural foods? I tend to eat more vegetables than meat. I really like eating asparagus, finished off some today. I usually boil it for 2 minutes, rinse with cold water. Then a put a lil bit of evoo in a non stick skillet and fry them for a couple of minutes. All I use for seasoning is salt and pepper. Got that from Paula Deen on Food Network Channel. What do your boys like to eat when it comes to veggies? The Food Network has a site where you can get all kinds of recipes.....FoodNetwork.com

I like asparagus too, though it's quite a seasonal vegetable.  I even bought some asparagus flavored vinegar recently and am going to use it today when I make a cucumber salad, along with poppyseed oil and fresh dill.

Alot of people resort to Vitamin water for supposed energy/minerals.
I personally drink it when I go to clubs or outings.
It tastes like something which is always great because I hate drinking water.

These new "smart waters" are supposedly full of replenishments like minerals and electrolytes.

The point is that its water with a bit of flavor... Do I think it does anything for your body? not really.
But water is important so drink up!

I tried it not in the hopes that I would be getting vitamins but that it would simply get me to drink more water. I personally feel it's a shame to have to pay for any kind of water but because I have to force myself to just drink the regular i thought it was worth a try. For me I didn't care for the left over aspartame taste it left so I went back to bottled no flavor. I switched to only bottled water after having H Pylori where my doctor told me it can be picked up by drinking regular or water fountain water.

Hello Queen,

Well lets try this again. My post got lost in Cyber-space ( hate that when that happens !!)  :(

You can click on the folllowing link, and then click on the nutritional data, of these flavor cartridges, There is nothing nutritional about them. Might as well drink kool aid !! I think this commercial by PUR was aimed at that kids, so they could get their parents to buy this product. Which seems to be so typical these days in advertising.

http://www.purflavoroptions.com/

I don't have a problem with the PUR filter, I use that filter. But the flavoring cartridges is just a bunch of garbage, aimed entirely for the young ones. Also the more the filter is used, with these cartridges, the more often you will have to replace the filter, which is exactly what they want you to do. That's where they are making their money.( in the filter replacements )  And I haven't even checked out, what they want for the cartridges, but I am sure it's way overpriced !!

I thought I would bump this up because I actually went to the vitamin water site by Glauceau. I am also drinking some at the moment too.... ;) I really hate the taste of water from the faucet and since I drink so much Pepsi. I figured taking in some vitamin water is better than nothing.... Here is their site....

Like to know what you think. I do agree I couldn't find anywhere where it says how much of anything per bottle. :-\

I drink it daily cause I have trouble drinking plain water.
Love the orange Essential but yes... it has fructose and yes, they probably sucked me in with marketing but at least I have cut our the Diet Coke!

Essential - 32 Fluild Ounces  (there is one in my hand!)  4 servings = 200 calories
- 13 g of sugar  (yikes)
Ok... I think I just talked myself out of it!

I'm trying to weigh the pros and the cons really. 25-30 grams of sugar, is that bad? I really need to get to that diabetic class. It's not like I eat a lot of starchy foods which makes sugar. I usually eat pretty healthy even when I have the munchies. My fave flavor is the dragonfruit but I have tried the xxx. I hate plain water whether it's faucet or bottled. I figured drinking the vitamin water is better than nothing. LOL@Aunty...designer pee huh, well someone on here likes drinking pee maybe I can send them mine. Hope they don't mind a bit of thc....lmao

Happy Holidaze, Your Highness!

Vitamins in water reminds me of Vitamin E in shampoo. Not enough to possibly do anyone any good (or harm in E's case). Modern "snake oil".
Get what you pay for.

Vitamin water was just bought by Coke and really is nothing but water filled with lots of sugar and little vitamin. The packaging is where they spend their time and money. It was a good idea but I don't think its really what they claim it to be.

What was wrong with your water filter ? They have all kinds - pitchers, faucet-mounted, or built-in to the water dispenser in the fridge. I used to have the faucet kind, but it ran very slow and I'm sort of impatient. Also, it made the faucet much lower and much harder to clean pots. I upgraded my fridge a couple years ago when I redid my kitchen to a Jenn-air model that has a built-in water filter. Even the icemaker uses filtered water. It prefilters up to 2 quarts and it runs pretty fast. I only drink that water, and do all my cooking with filtered water too. And I really like the taste of the water much better, I could never drink unfiltered water now.

Since I take a large number of vitamin supplements, I would never buy vitamin water. I don't like to buy bottled liquids in general. You pay a lot for the transportation, and bottles are heavy, bulky and take a lot of space in the house.

Still, once in a while I have been guilty of drinking some Rockstar sugar-free energy drinks. It's only got 20 calories and tastes sweet. The amount of calories is neglible (20). So is the amount of vitamins, compared to any multivitamin supplement which will cost much less. At costco the Rockstar sugar free will cost you a bit over $1/can. It's still rather expensive for what it is. The main reason I like to drink it is for the caffeine content. It's got 80mg. It's hard to get that amount anywhere else when you don't like the taste of coffee, and sometimes I really need that boost on my way to work or to the gym. And it's convenient not to have to prepare anything like tea, which has somewhat less caffeine, which I prefer to drink hot, but hot drinks have high risk in the car.

My niece is a nurse and told me that if you just put regular old tap water into the fridge and let it sit in there for 24 hours, all the sediment in it, kind of vanishes.

Hey madbrain, not sure if/when you're checking in here.  Sorry I didn't get to your post sooner. Yes, I could ask her how this happens.  It may take a little while to get an answer; she lives in Maryland, I live in Indiana and she works tons.  But I will ask.
