Title: Windows Vista Upgrade?
Post by: tnboy on March 15, 2007, 04:22:02 pm

I was wondering if anyone has upgraded to the new Windows Vista Upgrade?

My computer died last summer and right before Christmas I purchased a new desktop with a Vista upgrade when it was released. I just received the upgrade kit today but was wondering if anyone has had any experience with the upgrade. I checked out some sites about it and there seems to be some negative opinions about Vista.

Just wondering if anyone here has any advice to offer before I jump into this ? :o

Thanks,
Mike

If XP is working OK with the programs you use I'd stick with XP until Vista has been beta tested by others besides you.  Microsoft has never released a new OS which didn't have serious flaws as discovered quickly by new users.  Wait a while until others have tread such treacherous paths.  The programs you use will probably be supported under XP for several years but Vista versions may not even be out yet.

My PC is Vista-ready but I'm not.

I bought a HP laptop about a month ago that had Vista installed. So far I have not had a single thing not work properly, no lockups or even glitches. I bought the Vista upgrade for my desktop but I have not installed it yet. I want to make sure everything is backed up on an external hard drive before I install.

Make sure your other hardware will work with Vista. A friend just bought a new laptop with Vista, and it doesn't work with the printer he had been using for Windows XP. Sometimes you can download new drivers from the printer manufacturer's website, but this printer was a few years old and no drivers for Vista were available.

A double negation? Sounds appropriate for Microsoft :D :D :D

Hello Mike,

Haven't done the upgrade yet. I think I am going to hold off for a while. My fairly new computer has been in the shop now for about two weeks, still getting repaired. ( got to call them), and that computer is supposed to be Vista ready.

You can go to Microsoft and run the Vista Upgrade Advisor. This will let you know if your present computer is capable of handling Vista. It will also let you know, any problems your computer may encounter with the vista upgrade. Some of the older periferals may not work properly, or at all. Printer/scanner. You may have to download drivers.

I have uninstalled Vista on more customer machines lately than any other Microsoft opsys.  I'd strongly suggest waiting until the tech department catches up with the marketing department.

I also hate ie7.

Wait.

Keep in mind however that it is not Microsoft's (or any operating system creators) job to provide drivers for your peripheral hardware.   It is the responsibility of the product manufacturer to create drivers that allow a piece of hardware to work with a particular operating system.

While I haven't run into any real problems with Vista and my hardware, I still cannot get decent drivers for my soundcard for any version of Linux.   It's something of a crapshoot.

Thanks Guys So much for your input, I greatly appreciate all the advice. I know many of you use your computers much more than I do so I felt sure I could get some good feedback here.

Thanks for the websites, I will certainly check them out.  Anything new has to be tried and proven so time will tell I suppose.

I am in no hurry to make a change until I am more certain that it is a good change, and for now it appears there is more negative than positive results with this.

Again, Thanks for sharing your comments.
  Mike

Hey!  So does this mean you will be more in touch on here now for awhile?  I hope so...was concerned about you over the holiday season.  Hated when you were only able to pop on for a minute here and a minute there with month long gaps or so in between.  Knew you had been going through a lot.

 Hey Tim,

Thanks for your concerns and I do hope to be checking in more regular. Lots of things still going on in my world but I do hope for some better days to be near.

I have thought about you often and the kindness you always show toward me. I do appreciate it very much and look forward to being able to catch up with everyone in the near future. ;)

I hope you all have a Great Weekend!!
Mike

At the office, our infrastructure group attempted to upgrade an XP machine to Vista.  There some issues with existing programs relating to security plus some security settings were set so it was diffcult to add programs, browse, etc.  Our resident Microsoft expert told us to wipe it and then reload from scratch.  Apparently the upgrade is not as clean as Microsoft advertises.

As someone posted earlier, if you're not having problems, then XP will be fine for what your doing.  Wait for the first Service Pack to come out because it'll fix the problems the early adopters have discovered.  Microsoft usually takes three releases before they get it right and the SP1 will be the third.
