Title: CDC says...
Post by: silence79 on September 05, 2007, 02:59:01 pm
The CDC seems to think oral sex is a potential way to transmit HIV:

http://www.cdc.gov/hiv/resources/qa/qa19.htm

That kinda has me worried because, although i always use a condom, i usually don't if doing oral.  I dont always know the status of my partners so i'm not sure if i could have become infected by doing oral.

Thoughts?

There is not ONE verified document that says, that that is the only persons way of being exposed. All studies have shown that you don't contract HIV from oral sex.

Well i wish the CDC would be more clear about this.  I know they're particularly conservative when reporting numbers and possible routes of infection but their article almost seems to imply that oral sex is almost as risky as any other method..just from the tone of the article..so i got worried.

It doesn't even say that, it says, that it is a LOWER risk compaired to unprotect vaginal or anal sex.

i guess....

"while no one knows exactly what the degree of risk is, evidence suggests that the risk is less than that of unprotected anal or vaginal sex."

I'm not particularly comfortable with that choice of words "evidence suggests that ...risk is less".  How much less?  lots less?  slightly less?  Its confusing and retarded.

Then it goes on to say

"If the person receiving oral sex has HIV, ... cells lining the mouth of the person performing oral sex may allow HIV to enter their body."

Not feeling comfortable at all now!!

silence,

The CDC did what the Bush administration wants them to do - scare the bejeesus out of you.

There have been long-term studies of couples where one is positive and one is negative. In the couples who used condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, but no barrier for oral activities, not one of the negative partners became infected with hiv. Not one.

We don't use scare tactics here, we don't moralise and we don't judge people's sexuality. We deal in scientific facts and studies, period.

If you're worried about hiv, then test. As long as you've been using condoms, consistently and correctly for anal or vaginal intercourse, then you can fully expect your hiv test to return with negative results.

ANY sexually active adult should be having a full sexual health care check up, including but NOT limited to hiv testing, at least once a year. You can test more often if you're very active with many partners or if you have unprotected intercourse.

Check out the three condom and lube links in my signature line so you can use condoms with confidence. Use them correctly and consistently and you will avoid hiv infection. It really is that simple!

I'm with you...i get tested every 6 months.  My last test was 3 weeks ago and negative.  I was just wondering if i should get worried about hiv through oral.  CDC wasn't helping... (CDC: "WORRY OMG!!")

OK im done worrying thanks.

silence,

You're welcome.

When looking at ANYTHING on the internet, it's always wise to consider the source and who pays their bills. In the case of the CDC, it's the Bush Administration - the same government who still insists on pushing Abstinence Only programs, programs which have been proven to not work.

Condoms, condoms, condoms. Condoms have been proven to prevent hiv infection. Use them.

Title: brokeage...
Post by: silence79 on October 30, 2007, 03:09:20 pm
I was with a guy the other weekend and the condom broke.. i didn't notice though, i'm not sure for how long.  Well i asked if he was negative and he said he was, but you can never be sure.  Right now, a few days later, i feel pretty lousy and just generally tired, and have for a couple days, although i dont seem to have any other issues...and this could be the stress of final exams coming up coupled with the anxiety over this.  Anyway, someone tell me i'm going to be OK.  I have to wait 5 more weeks to get tested :(   Thanks..

OK...6 weeks, 8 weeks, 13 weeks..i've seen different numbers on here.    But its still many weeks to go.  I'm pretty sure i'm fine but it just really sucks to have to wait that long.  OK i'm off to do something else heh.

Hi,

I've merged your threads. Please follow our rules and keep all of your entries in the same thread.

13 weeks is the point at which you can get a definitive test result. The average time to seroconversion is 22 days. All but the smallest number will seroconvert within 4-6 weeks after a risky incident. A negative a 6 weeks is unlikely to change but you should still re-test at 13 weeks.

You haven't indicated whether you were the insertive or receptive partner. The condom would have provided protection until it broke. So the odds against transmission during this brief, single incident are very good.

If it was your condom that broke make sure you are using the right size for yourself.

Good luck with your test result. Keep us posted.

Insertive.  Still feeling like poo but my throat hurts which could be the reason.  I had a bit of a throat infection before the incident and this seems like a continuation of it.  Probably unrelated...lets hope.

OK. The risk to the insertive partner is lower than to the receptive partner. Odds are way, way in your favor that in relation to this brief possible exposure you will test negative.

Cheers,

Thanks.. definitely keeping my fingers crossed and trying to not freak out.  The mind is such a powerful force.  I've learned the hard way to always use protection...sucks having to go through this again.  I actually kinda like the guy and hope to see him again.  He's only 23 though and i'm 27.  Does this site offer dating advice?  haha

Yes, we do offer dating advice. Always use a condom for intercourse. After that you're on your own.

Would it kill you to laugh or smile or are people always bitchy on these forums?  I know this is a serious topic but, people, some of you are really jaded.  It doesn't  make or keep friends acting that way.

Huh?

I get that you're annoyed but I am not clear as to what inspired your latest comment.

My immediately previous response was intended to lighten the atmosphere. Apparently it didn't work. My bad?

Well it's been a few weeks. Haven't been tested for HIV.  Although i'm pretty sure im having primary herpes infection.  Have a small paper-cut like lesion.  Fairly classic herpes case.  fucking hell...

Herpes lesions do not resemble paper cuts. If you think you have HSV infection then you should consult your doctor. It is an entirely manageable condition.

Well its either that or i caught my skin in my zipper or something.  I havent been sexually active since the last occurance.  Its a paper cut like thing.  its open.  its fairly small.  its herpes cuz that's what my freaked-out mind is telling me.

Hmm..but its not a blister.  it looks like a paper cut.  its open.  i don't know.  ..... :-\

Exactly. You don't know. Only a doctor can tell you. We are not a herpes site. Take your lesions to your doctor.

yea..i dont see much of a point though...

Herpes+  "Congratulations, you have herpes.  Not much we can do. Please us condoms when you have sex."

Herpes-  "Congratulations, you don't have herpes.  Please use condoms when you have sex."

I just saw this.  We aren't here to entertain you.  I'm not here to make or keep friends with you, either.  Excuse the minor rant, but I take offense at this.  We're taking the time to try to help people like you and shouldn't be subject to your little commentaries here.
An apology should have been offered.

I already apologized and this issue is done and over with if you bothered to read the entire thread.

I'm not here to please you either.  Go troll on another thread and leave mine alone.

Oh, ok.  I guess i just took it wrong.  Maybe my bad.

...does not qualify as an apology.

And I did read the entire thread, including where you say above that you still haven't tested for HIV and also feel there is no point to having your lesions looked at by a medical professional.

So in other words, you are wasting all of our time, aren't you?

Silence, this is not  a place for you to get into firefights with others. It's an HIV information site. Consider yourself warned. If you get into any further angry exchanges you're going to get timed out and possibly be risk being banned from the site.

Despite a number of exchanges you've refused to get tested to put the HIV issue to rest. You also apparently are mistakenly diagnosing yourself as having herpes.

If you have all the bases covered so satisfactorily then I would say we've given you what we're able to do for you here. It seems not to have met nor satisfied your needs.

Perhaps you can find another site our source that will be more satisfactory. Whether you do that or not you cannot continue to engage in hostile exchanges here. If you have something to say about your HIV situation that hasn't already been covered that's acceptable.

But don't bother answering me back about the squabbles because that will get you timed out.

Then fucking consider me timed out.   She decided to troll, i didn't start anything.   >:(

She engaged in this thread, where she had nothing to do with it.  If you find that acceptable behavior,  go ahead and fucking ban me.  i cant stand double standards

and by the way - I haven't gotten tested because it hasen't passed the window period yet.

OK. You have earned a 30 day time out. Bad attitude and unacceptable language.

I will also say again for whatever consolation it maybe, that when you do get around to testing the odds are still very much in your favor against transmission having occured.
