hi there
I was diagnosed last july in the hospital when I was in pneumocistosis pulmonia....
reading my papers i can read than the test of rechearching of carinii bacteria was negative ...
but the diagnosis was pneumocistosis pulmonia...
is it posible? what is pneumocistosis and the why is it diferent of the pneumonia?

PCP is caused by a fungus. It used to be called pneumocystis carinii, but scientists now call it pneumocystis jiroveci. A healthy immune system can control the fungus. However, PCP causes illness in children and in adults with a weakened immune system.

If it's a fungus and not bacteria that causes it, I'm not sure why antibiotics would work . . . hmmm.

Hi there
I'm not exactly sure the in's an out's of the science involved but antibiotics have no effect on fungal infections because the fungi don't have the right chemical receptors for the antibiotics to target...so like you Inch I can't see how antibiotics work on Fungi...interesting.

Bactrim, which is an antibiotic, must work on the type of fungus that causes PCP otherwise it wouldn't be used as a PCP prophylactic.
-
Of course..Bactrim is known as a combination drug that contains sulfonamide (Sp?) and that is used to treat certain types of fungal infections, so PCP fungi must be one of them...Ann is right ...again.. ;)

mmm
When i was on the hospital I take 2 bactrim 2 times per day and now i'm in one bactrim 1 time per day.
because of my lab numbers.
my doctor says that bactrim works like antibiotic just if taked minimum 2 times per day... if not is just
an anti infections drug....
from the descriptions of bactrim I read that germs as pneumocystis carinii should also be regarded as sensitive because are germs sesitive to the trimetoprimasulfametoxazol association
inside the categorie germ i read there are virus (the smalest), fungos and bacteria

That helps to explain better why an antibiotic would work against a fungus.
Are you feeling better?
