Devastating Storms
« on: April 28, 2011, 12:05:24 am »
We are fine...much of the State is devastated by severe tornado damage.   Estimates on the number of deaths are still coming in, and growing.   A sad day for Alabama  :'(

Jeez Alan, how horrid!

After what happened to us down here late last year and early this year, my thoughts go out to everyone affected in the US. :(

The death toll for this State alone is over 130, and rising....

I thought I would post our "State Song" :

Alabama  by Julia S. Tutwiler

Alabama, Alabama, We will aye be true to thee,
From thy Southern shores where groweth,
By the sea thy orange tree.
To thy Northern vale where floweth,
Deep blue the Tennessee,
Alabama, Alabama, we will aye be true to thee!

Broad thy stream whose name thou bearest;
Grand thy Bigbee rolls along;
Fair thy Coosa-Tallapoosa
Bold thy Warrior, dark and strong,
Goodlier than the land that Moses
Climbed lone Nebo's Mount to see,
Alabama, Alabama, we will aye be true to thee!

From thy prairies broad and fertile,
Where thy snow-white cotton shines,
To the hills where coal and iron
Hide in thy exausted mines,
Strong -armed miners -sturdy farmers;
Loyal hearts what'er we be,
Alabama, Alabama, we will aye be true to thee!

From thy quarries where the marble
White as that of Paros gleams
Waiting till thy sculptor'ss chisel,
Wake to life thy poet's dreams;
Fear not only wealth of nature,
Wealth of mind has no fee,
Alabama, Alabama, we will aye be true to thee!

Where the perfumed south-wind whispers,
Thy magnolia groves among,
Softer than a mother's kisses,
Sweeter than a mother's song,
Where the golden jasmine trailing,
Woos the treasure-laden bee,
Alabama, Alabama, we will aye be true to thee!

Brave and pure thy men and women,
Better this than corn and wine
Make us worthy, God in Heaven
Of this goodly land of Thine.
Hearts as open as thy doorways.
Liberal hands and spirits free.
Alabama, Alabama, we will aye be true to thee!

Little, little can I give thee,
Alabama, mother mine.
But that little - hand, brain, spirit.
All I have and am are thine.
Take, O take, the gift and giver.
Take and serve thyself with me.
Alabama, Alabama, we will aye be true to thee!

So glad you are ok! The first thing I did when I heard how hard Alabama was hit I came here hoping to see a post by you saying you were ok. I was so relieved you had posted.

I will keep everyone affected by these devastating storms in my thoughts and prayers.

I was watching this on the news this morning. I was really worried you all were affected.

I am so very relieved you and yours are OK.

This has been a terrible week for the South.

So accuweather.com is saying updated stats now show that Wednesday was the second deadliest instance of tornado activity in US recorded history.

Its a very grim and getting worse . There are still over 400 missing or unaccounted for in Tuscaloosa .

I am at a loss for words about what has happend here in Birmingham . I'm incredibly sad for those that have lost so much .

I'm surprised the totals are so high, even with the tornado outbreak so severe that day. Abnormally high tornado activity in that area was predicted on all weather sites days in advance.  Even living in Philadelphia I knew this, and I know you knew it Jeff because you told me you specifically travelled to Tuscaloosa that day because your friends had a basement.  I guess it's like HIV -- you never think it will happen to you  :-*

I wasn't aware that there were so many listed as "missing" still -- assuredly most of these people are dead.

Funny you should mention this ... I was talking with my friends yesterday and we agree that we should have kicked each others ass , we never went into the basement that day . We were watching it on live TV destroy Tuscaloosa and we pretty much agree that the tornado passed near us because we saw it when I was in the back yard with my dog so she could poop . At this point my fear and concern was for other people , not us .

The power had been on and off for us andmany of the victims so early warnings were not heard or heeded . It was a huge lesson for us , next time to the basement I promise .

The problem was that even though people took shelter in their homes, say in an inside closet or bathroom, the F-4 or F-5 strength tornado was so powerful, it destroyed the entire structure, including the interior "safe spot".   If it made a direct hit on your house, you had practically no chance of surviving.  We have seen a few "miracle stories", but for the most part the results are very grim.

The national news is mostly focused on Tuscaloosa; but Cullman, parts of Birmingham, Ohatachee, and lots of other places have major damage.

It will take us a long time to recover from this.

This is all so wizard of oz for me cause tornados never happened where I grew up.

There are bomb shelters all over ever sq kilometer of urban switzerland. But my building doesn't have one. I know where they are on campus.

I don't know what I would do, if I were home.  I guess go down to the cellar very close to the stone foundations and open some wine to take off the edge.

So glad Alan and Jeff are safe. When I heard about this on the news, I had immediately sent them both pm's, so I haven't been ignoring this.

I lived in Tuscaloosa before, and went through a tornado, though certainly nothing like what just happened.  After the tornado, it didn't take me long to move back North.

Im curious - how expensive would it be to build concrete bunkers that are safe in tornados??

http://www.noaanews.noaa.gov/stories2005/s2418.htm

That's probably the most notorious story about this area, and that's one county to the East of where I live.  I personally have never encountered a tornado where I live, and I've lived in this area almost all my life (saving the times I lived in Alabama).  We get some pretty heavy storms, and sometimes there are reports of "funnel clouds," and maybe tornadoes in surrounding counties.  But at least in the particular area I'm at, no, I've never experienced a tornado.

meech, there was a piece on CNN today about just that. Some of the people who survived did so in underground bunkers. The National Weather Service says that to survive a direct hit from an EF-4 or 5 (the higher end tornadoes) one would need to be in a room with 2 foot concrete reinforced walls.

There is considerable discussion in states along "Tornado Alley" about mandating these in the construction of new homes, of course, politics will likely de-rail it in most places.

Considering 50% of tornado deaths are due to mobile homes I don't see this is very likely, unless someone plans to ban them.
