Nutritional advice needed
« on: May 22, 2012, 04:05:58 pm »
Hey everyone,

I am newly diagnosed and feel a bit overwhelmed by the information on the internet about nutrition and HIV. Some sites indicate that its better to go vegan while others suggest that a bit of everything is what we need. I don't know what my CD4 and VL are just yet but I really want to get a head start on my general health. Currently my only issue is fatigue but I started on multivitamins yesterday so I'm hoping that will help.

Kindly advice me further. I did read the disclaimer that persons here are not medical advisors but I would appreciate your opinions. Thank you.

Welcome to the forums!

I am sorry you had to come here, but glad you found this place.

I will suggest that perhaps a moderator move this post to "Just Tested Poz" because it will get a lot more traffic, though you'll no doubt be getting a lot of advice.

Me, I have had HIV since 1993. Doing great on meds with decent numbers. I try to watch what I eat, more out of financial reasons than anything else - I can't afford fat pants.

Some people on meds report elevated cholesterol levels, and there is evidence to suggest that limiting sodium intake/healthy dietary choices made EARLY are easier to maintain. As you just tested positive, you will no doubt be looking at your first labs sometime soon. Though CD4 count, Viral Load, and percentages are important, things like cholesterol and lipids are also worth paying attention to.

I wouldn't recommend any hugely restrictive dietary choices unless you want to do them for your own reasons. You can eat whatever you want, but of course fresh veggies, lean meats and the like are fairly obvious choices.

Never heard of going vegan purely for HIV however. Thats new to me.

Hi J,

Thank you for responding. 1993 huh! That's quite a long time. I suppose I should be looking forward to doing my Masters and PhD afterall. I'm truly inspired by reading the posts on this site. You seem to be so contented and now I feel more confident just by reading into the tone of your response. Thank you. I hope we all live long, healthy lives.

Positivelyhopeful,

Great name!  Stay hopeful.  I have been positive since 1993 as well.  Take good care of yourself and get your education!
