My home is a happier one

My husband made this deal with our daughter that if she raised her school grades she could get a cat. She raised her grades and had her teachers call us since she did not raise grades in time to be listed on her quarterly report card. So I took her last week to adopt a cat from the shelter.
The trip to the shelter was a tearful experience for my daughter. I held back my tears, but I did want to take all those thirty something dogs, cats, and one ferret home with us.
Our cat's name is Geo. He is nervous, but likes to climb onto the dinner table to eat my food, lay on my laptop when I am typing, sleeps under my daughter's bed, likes orange soda- we found out on accident, and likes to lay by the floor vents when the heat comes on. We are feeding him Science Diet kitten. So he is getting a nutritious diet.
I am so happy that we have him. My daughter did an excellent job of picking out Geo. He has brought a lot of joy to us these past few days. I never thought of myself as an animal lover, but apparently if I don't have a pet my home feels empty. Everyone in our home is happier. 
We plan on seeing how things are in our home and might adopt another cat next October. My husband said he might snag a small dog at the same time.
Having a pet is a responsibility. Only we are used to caring for animals so this seems to be what we've been missing.
