How long?
« on: May 12, 2008, 12:50:48 pm »
Hi there,

I'm 14 weeks pregnant and was asked if I wanted to take an HIV test.  I said yes.  I had unprotected sex about a year ago and figured it may be a good idea to have myself checked.   My problem is that I took the test a week ago and I am just going crazy.  I feel like I have convinced myself that I have HIV.

Can someone please tell me how long it takes to get results back?

Duck,

It can take anywhere from twenty minutes to two weeks (sometimes more), depending on where you tested and what specific type of antibody test they used. In cases like these, no news is usually good news - if the test were positive they'd have you back in there pronto. If you don't hear by tomorrow, give them a ring and find out what's up.

This wait is just killing me.  I keep trying to call the office and no one is answering.  Its been since last Monday, don't you think they would have the results by now?  I'm in toronto and the test was a CBC for HIV....?????

Well, it's difficult to not have your head go crazy with all the worst ideas, but testing sites are notoriously various in how long they take to deliver results.

Alternatively you might check out and see if there is another site in your immediate area when you could just go and get tested now. Any AIDS service organization ought to be able to help you out with that if you just don't want to wait any longer.

Like Ann I urge you to not misinterpret and read any dark meanings into this delay.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Ya I did call, and they told me I could go for a rapid HIV test and gave a few locations, however, they said the wait is probably about a week with them as well.

Hmmmm. Well, in the meantime you may well get your hopefully negative result from the original site you used.

You can cover your bases by getting a second test so that one way or the other you'll have a result soon. And even though the second site said a week they sometimes deliver sooner.

No question about it, this waiting time when you're anxiously awaiting a result is torturous. Meantime keep yourself busy with other things and the waiting will pass more quickly than you may imagine is possible.

Cheers,

That's great! Must be a huge relief to you.

Now you can get on with the extraordinary experience of pregnancy and becoming a mother.

Oooops I did it again!

Good evening,

I have a question and was wondering if anyone knew the answer to this.  I was dating a man since Jan and we recently broke up.  We had unprotected sex many times.  He had a HIV test done back in July and he was negative.  Would that make me negative as well?  We had unprotected sex many times.

I had an HIV test done about 2 and 1/2 years ago and was negative.  I also had unprotected sex (I think) before the man I was dating.  So I guess I am more worried about the other man before this last bf.  Sorry if this is confusing.

Thanks in advance for your replies.

 Please do not start a new thread every time you have another question or thought - regardless if you think your questions are related to each other or not. It helps us to help you when you keep all your thoughts or questions in one thread and it helps other readers to follow the discussion. Additional threads will be merged.

I have merged your threads here. Please keep all entries in this same thread. Thanks for your cooperation.

The only time you can ever dispense with using condoms is should you find yourself in a securely monogamous relationship in which both partners have reliably tested negative together. Otherwise you need to make sure that the guy you are with is always wearing a condom for vaginal and anal intercourse. No exceptions no matter what you think you know about his health status or history or how great he looks. Condoms are a must. Even a well intentioned guy may not know his accurate status. You always need to take the protections which presume the person you are with is HIV+.

If you have had unprotected intercourse only an HIV specific test at 13 weeks will give a reliable answer about your HIV status.
