Hello,

I have a concern. I went to my dentist for my routine cleaning. I have been going to the same dentist now for 7 years.

However, I noticed that as the hygenist (who normally cleans my teeth) was wearing gloves as usual.

The only thing is I didn't notice nor did I ask if the dental tools were clean.

After 2 weeks from my cleaning I am noticing a rash on both my arms and nausea and just not feeling well. I don't have a fever.

I abstain from sex and never did drugs (whether injected or whatever).

Am I at risk from HIV?

Do I require an HIV test?

are the symptoms I described ARS?

You are worrying over nothing.

Please read through the lessons here and educate yourself on how HIV is and sisn't transmitted.

Sorry for asking it's just that I never had these symptoms both arm rashes, and nausea ....just feeling "generally ill"

I am not even sleeping at night cause I am always worried.

I keep checking for symptoms

For some reason which has nothing to do with HIV science you are patching together bits and voila! attributing your rash and other "symptoms" to HIV. If your symptoms persist you should discuss them with your doctor. There's absolutely no sound basis for you to think HIV is the issue here. Period.

I would like to ask a few other things and that's all please in regards to this

what makes you think it is not HIV related

do you think I require HIV testing

what is the risk of HIV at the dentist for a cleaning

Do you seriously think your dentist would allow the use of tools that weren't cleaned between patients? No way, mate. It doesn't happen. No dentist would open themselves to the kind of lawsuit that would result.

If you can't stop worrying about this, I suggest you ring the dentist and discuss your concerns about the tools with him.

Whatever is going on with you has NOTHING to do with hiv.

I am just concerned cause back ini the 80's I heard there was a documented case of a dentist transmitting it to 6 of his patients.

That was over twenty years ago! Today, all medical professionals know about hiv and they practice what is called universal precautions. This not only stops hiv transmission, but the transmission of other pathogens as well.

Once again, if you don't believe me, ring your dentist and discuss your concerns with him.

You only need to test for hiv if you've been having unprotected anal or vaginal intercourse with someone of unknown or positive hiv status. You do NOT need to test because you got your teeth cleaned! (Get a grip!)

recently i was diagnosed as HIV+. I am a very clean person. No sexual activity with anyone, but my wife of 16 years. No blood transfusions, no drug use so no shring of needles. The risk factors are not there. The only thing thaI can think of if I have had oral surgery and a few kindey stone operations, along with regular dental cleaning. There is the stigma out there that it is only a gay's man disease and my wife thinks that is how i got it. We have talked many times and tried to figure this out, if it was in the medical fiedl we may never fidn out, but how do I help her understand that she is the only person that I have been with. I have been tested for all the other STD's and they have come up negative. It is so baffling to us. Would it also be wise to get a second opinion?

People aren't always honest about how they picked up their infection - especially when there's a life-partner involved.

I must say you guys are always right. You guys are very informative. And I am sorry if I bothered you with my questions.

I did the HIV test after 1 month of going for the dental cleaning. I called the doctor to see if my HIV test result is in and my HIV test result - NEGATIVE!!!!! Yes I know you wonderful people told me this. I know 3 months is the window period. However, I can now safely say that I haven't had a risk by just going to the dentist for a cleaning. So I am not testing over this in another 2 months. I have been going to the same dentist and had the same hygienist for over 7 years.

Concerned,

Use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse and you'll remain hiv negative. It really is that simple.

I can only speak for myself - but I've been positive for going on twelve years now and I've read the research and kept up-to-date. I also pick my doctor's brains (and the nurses) at the clinic where my hiv is monitored whenever there's something I want clarification on. My hiv doc only does clinical practice one day a week - the rest of the time he's involved in research at the University of Liverpool. He's published extensively on the subject of hiv.

I don't just talk the talk, I walk the walk. Was in a relationship with an hiv negative man for over eight years, and he remained hiv negative.

Ann I hope they find a cure for HIV. In my opinion, I don't think anyone deserves this terrible virus. Whether people got it through high risk events or not.

However, I want to say that you guys make this a wonderful site. I have learned a lot from you all here on this site. Thank you for dedicating your time to inform us.

I guess the only way we have now to fight HIV/AIDS is protection and education.
