NYC-end of the month
« on: November 12, 2013, 11:02:09 am »
Hello everyone,

My partner and I will be heading to NYC the day after Thanksgiven.  I have never been.  Anyone have any suggestions?

I will say that my plan is to propose on December 1st in Strawberry fields on the Imagine medallion.

While you will undoubtedly want to go up the Empire State Building to the observation deck, for my money the better view is to go up to what is called "Top of the Rock" -- the observation deck of Rockefeller Center as you can really get better photographs of the skyline:

http://www.topoftherocknyc.com

Ice skating in Bryant Park would be enjoyable this time of year.  http://bryantpark.org/things-to-do/wintervillage.html

If you want to go to the "hip" area take the subway down to the Lower East Side and visit the Tenement Museum: http://www.tenement.org  But then walk around the adjoining streets as there are some great shops and trendy restaurants/bars, and then not a far walk from the Village and/or Soho. These areas give you more of a feel of NYC during the late 19th century in terms of architecture.

Oh, and make sure you go over to the west side to the Meatpacking District and take a stroll on the High Line.   http://www.thehighline.org

Thanks Miss Philicia!

meech between the both of us we have many diverse interest.  I like the suggestions that Miss Philicia gave, but I do not see going ice skating.  I know one night we like go dancing somewhere.  Was thinking about maybe seeing a show while we were in town too.  We like to explore.

My other question is about parking.  My partner works for a hotel here where we live and the owner also has a hotel in Nyack NY where we will be staying for free.   This means we are going to have to commute into the city.

Need any restaurant suggestions? Like something not full of tourists?

ps: oh, you're not staying in the city. Seriously, do not drive into the city. Go across the Tappen Zee Bridge from Nyack and catch the Metro North train into the city from Tarrytown. It will take you right to Grand Central Terminal (45 minutes), with connections to most subways. I think this will save you much anxiety in looking for parking and/or paying exorbitant amounts in a garage.

If you want to see a Broadway show you either pick what you really want and pay, or use the TKTS discount booth in Times Square to get 20-50% off ticket prices.

And if you don't like actually ice skating then at least go to the small rink at Rockefeller Center and just watch people for an hour, because that's also where the huge NYC Christmas tree is located, plus it's right off Fifth Avenue so you can do a lot of window shopping and people looking.

Yeah don't bother driving, take the train.
http://as0.mta.info/mnr/schedules/sched_form.cfm

The night you go dancing - plan it to well - get to Grand Central well ahead of the train and especially the last train. Looks like the last train these days is 1.50 AM

So plan on an early evening of dancing or a very late one - meaning dance all night and take the morning train back to your hotel

Dont arrive at Grand Central late at night and miss your train because the station closes and Midtown East  is kinda creepy in the middle of the night.

However, I checked on Yelp - there seem to be more all night coffee shops now in Midtown then back in my time - so if worse comes to worst...
http://www.yelp.com/search?find_desc=all+night+diner&find_loc=New+York%2C+NY#l=p:NY:New_York:Manhattan:Midtown_East

______

Most other neighbourhoods have places to go in the middle of the night if you get sick of a club or disco.  So just stick in that neighbourhood if there are people on the streets.

_____

for all kinds of possible activities:  you can look at Time Out to get some ideas

Yes suggestions of places to eat would be great and I do realize that we are out in the burbs, however it's free.  Thanks for the information of the train that is exactly what I was trying to figure out.   ;D

I always eat here, but that's also because a friend owns it :) but it's highly regarded in the NYC foodie scene:  http://www.casamononyc.com  Just make sure and make a reservation, but they also have a decent amount of seats at the bar overlooking the cooking area.

The original Momofuku Noodle Bar is still a must, though 10 years old now: http://momofuku.com/new-york/noodle-bar/

I still like both Lucky Strike and Odeon for a taste of 1980's NYC hipness:

http://www.luckystrikeny.com
http://theodeonrestaurant.com

Balthazar in Soho is still great: http://www.balthazarny.com

Pearl & Ash in Nolita would be fun: http://www.pearlandash.com

And Eataly is a huge Italian emporium selling both foodstuffs and operating several small restaurants:  http://www.eataly.com/restaurants

I agree with Miss P to go to Top of the Rock; add to that a visit to the Statue of Liberty and a truly delightful Broadway show is Lion King; if weather good top of a double-decker bus tour is memorable.

Shopping in speciality stores. Stores that only exist there (and increasingly less so) related to some hobby or interest, or sartorial interest. Ribbon. Fabric. Boots. Leather. Chinese medicine. Sex toys. etc.

Walking through huge department stores just for the ambience.
Cheap reliably good food: chinese, indian, soul, eastern european, mexican, etc etc.  Smoked fish. Bagels.  http://www.barneygreengrass.com/restMenu.php

Full slate of very specialised nightlife.

I won't attempt to make gay nightlife recommendations, seeing as how it's been a decade since I lived in NYC and even though I return there to see friends once or twice yearly. I put a halt to clubs after the age of 35, though a bar is OK.

However, I think a general rule of thumb at the moment as goes bars is that the ones in Hell's Kitchen attract the hairless young twink crowds, while the ones downtown in the East Village attract 30-something semi-bear, though fashionable-ish bears types.

You have two weeks so pilfer around here and see what appeals to you in the listings, and of course you can pick up a hard copy upon arrival:

Don't drive! You don't want to either deal with traffic or worry about your car and its whereabouts.

I wish I could be helpful on nightlife, but I'm past my prime. I can say that everything seems to have moved to Hell's Kitchen (West side, 40s), unless you want a traditional West Village thing, in which case Christopher St and Sheridan Sq remain pretty gay. There are only a couple of places in Chelsea anymore, as best I can tell. Check Next Magazine for listings and a map: http://www.nextmagazine.com/

Congratulations on your proposal plans. :)

Thank you all for your suggestions and I'm officially engaged!

Unfortunately we were unable to attend the Worlds AIDS days event in Time Square on Sunday  :(  due to the derailment of the Metro North Line Sunday morning and my proposal plans when out the window as well.  However, we really enjoyed the city and we did a lot.

Saturday we arrived at Grand Central station and then visited Time Square both at day and then again at night. (WOW we needed sunglasses at night)  We also went up to the top of the Rockerfella Center and there were some awesome views!  We checked out St. Patrick's Cathedral.  They are working on restoring it, but what we could see was beautiful!  We ended up seeing the Christmas Spectacular at Radio City.  We walk around this area of the city and really enjoy ourselves.

Sunday due to the train derailment (RIP those that lost their lives) we stayed locally in Nyack, which is a nice area and we visited the Palisades Center.  WOW what a place.  It was our 1 year anniversary on December first and we shared a little quite time back in the hotel where we exchanged cards and I popped the question.  ;D   We ended the evening going to see the Dallas Buyers Club.

Monday we had to drive over into White Plains to catch the train there.  We explored the Central Park area and spent some time walking around Central Park and visited Strawberry Fields and the Imagine medalion.  (This was where I was planning on proposing on Sunday)  We then took the subway to Manhattan and visited the World Trade Center Memorial.  They have done such awesome job with this!  We then explore this area of the city for a bit until be called it a day!

Congrats on your engagement.

The Christmas Show at Radio City is good fun. I thought it would be lame and hokey but enjoyed it decades ago -- plus the interiors of Radio City are awesome.

Just so the mental map is correct when you recall your fun trip, Central Park was in Manhattan, too. :)

I'll assume the Christmas show included the Rockettes?! Aren't they great!

We pick up the subway on 49th and took it to WTC.  1st time in city

Yes the show was very good.  They made it snow inside was pretty cool and the 3D part was good too.  We enjoyed it other then the small loud kids that sat behind us...
