Taking another stab at it
« on: May 05, 2013, 11:38:45 am »
The doctor has been reviewing some meds to determine what to do with my elevated lipids.

I have tried, without success, to bring them down with diet and exercise, and, as I mentioned in the past, statins are out of the question.

So, the doc came up with a golden oldie for me - Cholestyramine.

It is a bile acid binder that works in the intestines to bind the cholesterol before it is absorbed. That means the body has to use the cholesterol in the body for energy, which is supposed to lower the levels.

I guess we will see.

It is a powder that is mixed with the liquid of your choice. Then you drink it.

I started it Friday night. So far, I have not experienced any of the potential side effects.

It is orange flavored, so whatever you mix it with tastes rather like sandy, gritty Tang.

You also cannot allow it to sit for too long, because it becomes somewhat gelatinous. The insert said not to hold it in your mouth because it can cause dental erosion and such.

So, I will carefully rinse after drinking it.

But, otherwise, it is a no brainer.

I still have to stick to the low-fat, low-carb, low-sugar and gluten free diet, but I am more or less accustomed to it at his point.

I will let you all know how it goes.

HUGS,

Mark

Mark,

Best of luck with it and hopefully it will provide you with the much needed positive results.

This issue has been a struggle for you and for a very long time.

Hang in. Alain
