Very worried
« on: August 29, 2007, 12:21:43 am »
Hi Guys,

I am seriously worried about a recent oral encounter with a person of unknown status. I had oral sex performed on me which lasted for about a minute.  Unfortunately I only noticed that i had several tiny sores on my penis afterwards, which were aggravated and opened up by the act. >:(

Needless to say that I am petrified by the rather stupid situation I appeared to have got myself into.   What are my risks in terms of hiv exposure assuming that sores were opened whilst in this person's mouth???...   i am not aware of the oral hygiene of  the Person involved so one can only assume the worst :-[

Please please help with any advice you may have...  I understand that you have probably had similar questions like this previously but any feedback will be appreciated.

Many Thanks in advance for your help

Regards M

M,

Getting a blowjob, no matter what sort of spin you can think of to put on it, is NOT a risk for hiv infection. Never has been, never will be and you will NOT be the first to be infected in this way.

There have been long-term studies of couples where one is positive and one is negative. In the couples who used condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, but no barrier for oral activities, not one of the negative partners became infected with hiv. Not one.

You need to be using condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, every time, no exceptions until such time as you are in a securely monogamous relationship where you have both tested for ALL sexually transmitted infections together. To agree to have unprotected intercourse is to consent to the possibility of being infected with an STI. Sex with a condom lasts only a matter of minutes, but hiv is forever.

Have a look through all three condom and lube links in my signature line so you can use condoms with confidence.

Anyone who is sexually active should be having a full sexual health care check-up, including but not limited to hiv testing, at least once a year and more often if unprotected intercourse occurs.

If you aren't already having regular, routine check-ups, now is the time to start. As long as you make sure condoms are being used for intercourse, you can fully expect your routine hiv tests to return with negative results. Don't forget to always get checked for all the other sexually transmitted infections as well, because they are MUCH easier to transmit than hiv.

Use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, correctly and consistently, and you will avoid hiv infection. It really is that simple!

Hi Ann,

Thanks for your reply...

I absolutely understand that oral sex is fairly safe and there is no documented evidence...

My worry however is with the fact that i had sores which may or were opened during the act...  Is it your assertion that this will not increase my risk even though the opening created is a theorectical route of entry??

my apologies if i appear to be labouring over the same point...

your feedback as always is truly appreciated

Many Thanks
M..

Not only is saliva not infectious, but it also contains over a dozen different proteins and enzymes that damage hiv and render it unable to infect.

Getting a blowjob is NOT a risk for hiv infection.

Ann,

Once again thanks for your considered replies...

Just one more question and I'll be on my way...

It's is my belief that the painful sores on my genitalia to which i was referring in my previous post is a form of herpes.  This has reoccurred periodically over several years...  I have always refrained from any sexual contact at these times...   Anyways my lapse this time round has obviously created this situation..

Given the nature of herpes and the ease with which it is passed around (even through saliva) are you still of the opinion that my risk for oppourtunistic infection from hiv is too low to warrant testing??

Again my thanks for you anticipated help.

I will say yes.

I am much more concerned about your partners than I am for you in this situation.  You need to be more mindful of not spreading your herpes, dude.

I'm not trying to sound hateful- but seriously.

M,

Herpes isn't "passed" through saliva, it's transmitted via skin to herpes-blister-skin contact.

Hiv is also NOT transmitted via saliva.

One more time - getting a blowjob, no matter what sort of spin you can think of to put on it, is NOT a risk for hiv infection. Never has been, never will be and you will NOT be the first to be infected in this way.

M, herpes sores, nicks, bruises, cuts, pimples and whatever else people worry over, the bottom line is no one has ever been confirmed to have been HIV infected from getting a blowjob. We feel safe is saying you aren't going to make history by becoming the first.

It's good to know that generally you are careful about not indulging when you're having an outbreak. We're just suggesting to be absolutely scrupulous about it. Other STDs are much easier to give and to get than HIV.

This time out you have no cause for further concern about HIV.

Cheers,

hi,

I recently met up with a person of unknown status and had two way oral sex which I doubt lasted more than 45 seconds in totality (wonder why one bothered   ::))... There was no ejaculation....  and no precum from him(at least i hope not!)....  problem here is that from time to time my gum does bleed :-[...

i did not notice any bleeding this time when getting rid of the saliva that filled my mouth as a result, from which i probably almost drowned myself :'(... however the worry was there was still a chance an infection may have happened!....

In the last day or so the obligatory sore throat + other symptoms have mysteriously emerged...  whilst i understand that these are not indications of anything one way or the other...  my mind is still in turmoil at the moment... :(

Do i need to be thinking about testing or are my risks not worth bothering about :-\

sincere thanks in advance and any help would be truly appreciated

man,

I've merged your new thread into your original thread - where you should post all your additional thoughts or questions. It helps us to help you when you keep all your additional thoughts or questions in one thread.

If you need help finding your thread when you come here, click on the "Show own posts" link under your name in the left-hand column of any forum page.

Please also read through the Welcome Thread so you can familiarize yourself with our Forum Posting Guidelines. Thank you for your cooperation.

You don't need to worry about this blowjob. Reports of people becoming infected through giving blowjobs rarely hold up under scientific scrutiny. A 45 second blowjob with no cum - pre or otherwise - is not going to put you into that extremely rare catagory.

Not only is saliva not infectious, but it also contains over a dozen different proteins and enzymes that damage hiv and render it unable to infect.

As for your sore throat, see your doctor if it persists. It's nothing to do with hiv.

Thanks Ann...

as i stated in my previous post...  my gums do bleed sometime...  what if this was the case during oral even if i had not noticed..  wouldn't that increase the risk quite abit more??

I also developed a sore throat and slight cold just about a week after this meeting. this is sounds more to me than mere coincidence???

any thoughts please?

thanks again

How many ways and how many times do you need to hear the same response? NO RISK NO RISK NO RISK NO RISK!

Get on with your life.

If you have symptoms that are bothering you that's something to discuss with your doctor. They have nothing to do with HIV.

i recently had an encounter with another guy with lots of mutual oral sex.... absolutely no ejaculation involved during oral, however i was able to taste something (not sure if was precum).  Once he had come(by himself!) he also rubbed against my ass while totally flaccid and fairly dry although somewhat sticky.....

i had no bleeding gums as far as i could tell at that moment but i often do bleed from my gum

my question is that if the taste i experienced was precum.. have i exposed myself to a real threat of transmission??? please help

Re-read your entire thread. You have asked this question before and our previous answers also apply to your recent situation. Our answers aren't going to be any different.

Ann,

Thanks for your last reply....

unfortunately since my last post i have had a painful persistent sore throat & cough which persists as i type...   whilst i understand that symptoms aren't an indication one way or another...   is it not more than mere coincidence that this is happening after the recently described episode...  i cant help thinking that i would be fine if the episode hadn't occurred....

i also read up some of the studies you posted elsewhere regarding this subject, which suggested transmission via oral act to be "rare" rather than impossible..  whilst I do not wish to question your expertise in this area...  i am unable to ignore that fact that it is not impossible to transmit orally, as well as the persistent symptoms that i am currently experiencing...

do i need to test?

any thoughts will be appreciated

Many thanks
M

You had another non-risk encounter.

You need to apply the information given to you previously to your ongoing experiences rather than coming here all frightened and trembling as if nothing has ever been said to you before about what is risky and what isn't.

If you are going to continue to have sex, (which is quite understandable), you need to start thinking about what you are doing and applying the information which you have received to evaluate whether there has been a risk of not. It's not complicated stuff. As long as you consistently use condoms for anal (and vaginal) intercourse you will be well protected against the sexual transmission of HIV.

Period.

And if you have symptoms that are bothering you that is something to discuss with your doctor.
