Swine Flu vaccine
« on: October 01, 2009, 10:45:49 pm »
My PCP told me at my last visit that I should not get the Swine Flu shot because it's a live virus. I take what my doctor tells me very seriously, but other people say I should get it. I get the regular flu shot along with the other booster shots, from my PCP.

Anyone have any thought about this, the swine flu vaccine?http://

That is very interesting.  In my case, my PCP (ID Specialist) recommended that I get vaccinated as soon as the vaccine becomes available.  It is a live virus but I don't know what this means for folks with compromised immune systems.  Here is what Wikipedia says about live vaccines:

"Vaccines containing live, attenuated virus microorganisms - these are live micro-organisms that have been cultivated under conditions that disable their virulent properties, or which use closely-related but less dangerous organisms to produce a broad immune response. They typically provoke more durable immunological responses and are the preferred type for healthy adults. Examples include yellow fever, measles, rubella, and mumps. The live Mycobacterium tuberculosis vaccine developed by Calmette and Guérin is not made of a contagious strain, but contains a virulently modified strain called "BCG" used to elicit immunogenicity to the vaccine."

(Wow, I didn't know there was a MAC vaccine...)

As far as I can tell, there is a recommendation, if you have HIV to get the Swine Flu Vaccine. I was not aware that there were two shots: and two different 'strains'? H1N1 and novel H1N1. This was a first for me.

I was told at my last appointment that when it came in, I would be getting it.

Hi ,

I had the regular flu shot, just about 24 hours ago. I am going to asking my doctor about this, on my next visit and get his reaction.

Take care----Ray

Yes people that have HIV/AIDS should not get the live virus shots. The other HINI vaccines will be available for HIV/AIDS patients apx. 3 weeks after the live virus is released.

atx,

If someone is HIV+, they should probably get the flu shot. The shot they should receive is the deactivated virus injection, not the live virus mist as RapidRod posted. Here:

The vaccines for both the regular seasonal flu and for H1N1 flu are of two types:

1.  an injection, via needle, with inactivated virus
2.  a nasal spray, with live but weakened virus

Those with HIV should definitely get both vaccines, but they should get ONLY the injected type, with inactivated virus.  They should NOT get the nasal-spray vaccine for either of the two flus.

The issue isn't necessarily whether or not you would die from the flu in determining whether or not to get a flu shot.  Jebus.

I got the flu in early October last year, a month before I was scheduled to get flu vaccination.  I ended up with having to get chest X-rays and with bronchitis.  It took me over a month to recover, and my CD4's declined by over 200.

Meanwhile I've had a flu shot every year since I was diagnosed, and haven't gotten the flu a single time.  I'm not about to touch all of those handles and polls in a subway car and run around willy nilly without having had a flu shot.

I've gotten tons of upper respiratory infections, but that's not the same as the flu, plus I've gotten those easily since I was a child so there's not much I can do about it.

I saw my PCP this afternoon, for another issue, which she confirmed, I reference the flu and swine flu, persons who have been diagnosed with AIDS are get the injection of both the flu and swine flu.

The safe swine flu injections will not be ready for use, no later than November10, 2009

For what when to see my doctor was right on the money, a respiratory infection, which will add 4 bactim tablets to my pill box. After three lengthily battles with Pneumocystis Pneumonia (PCP), my lungs are scared  http://

I just got off the phone, with my doctors office.  I mentioned the fact, that we have now signed up for the H1N1 at work. ( Still not certain as to when we will get it, but I am sure it will be shortly.) I signed up for it this past Monday the 12th.

I asked if it was OK to get it.  The answer "yes".  I also mentioned that I had just received, the annual flu shot on October 1st, and if there was any problem, having both vaccines.  the answer "No"

So, I am just going to wait, and see who gets it first.  My doctors office, or my workplace.

I'm supposed to call my doc's office Monday to see if they have the H1N1 flu vaccines in.  These will be the "dead" virus.  I'm going to try to get a regular flu shot this afternoon.  When I was at my doc's Monday, they were out.  I'm going to try a CVS, and hopefully will get there before they run out.

I got my regular flu shot yesterday afternoon.  Evidently my HIV clinic is meeting with "the city" (I assume the health department) on Friday and should know Monday when the H1N1 shots will be available.

Oh hey, they're even on facebook!
