Work opportunities
« on: May 30, 2010, 06:23:38 pm »
Does anyone know of organizations or companies that sponsor vocational training programs, or employment resources for HIV+ individuals?

Being unemployed again I feel the need to switch gears and learn a new trade, or at least upgrade my skill set to be more competitive.  I'm particularly interested in opportunities in NYC.

As far as vocational training is concerned, there's an organization called Vocational Rehabilitation that does provide that sort of thing.  HIV is considered a disability by their standards (at least for the voc. rehab here), so you should qualify.  I'm unsure about their location in New York, but they're in the phone book.  I would give them a shot.

Thanks, BT65.  That sounds like a great idea.

Vocational Rehabilitation is a great service that can help you -- but I understand their services are for veterans. Not sure if they'll help you if you're not a vet.

If you've been unemployed for 4 mos or longer and have HIV, you should be eligible for a 'work hardening' program. Work hardening programs are run by specially certified physical  or occupational therapists and can help you deal with the range of physical and psychosocial issues that can be impediments to getting back to competitive employment. Studies have shown that work hardening programs have a very good success rate.

One government agency that offers work hardening to the rest of us is known as VESID. VESID does not focus on HIV/AIDS, but HIV should be in their scope. There may also be private agencies in NY that can help you, depending on your particular needs and interests. VESID has a website for the NY area: http://www.vesid.nysed.gov.

This is an area I would very much like to work in; I'm an occupational therapist myself, working in a hospital setting in New York. I'd love to hear what you find out and how it works out for you.

Best regards,

Dan

Hi Dan.  Actually Vocational Rehabilitation does offer services to others besides vets.  At least in Los Angeles county they did.  I used them years ago after a job layoff, to get referrals for training programs suitable to me.

The office I went to even gave me an IQ test and skill assessment.  It was a lengthy process though.  I think I was considering Graphic Arts training, and I was appointed to a counselor that was to assist with school search.

I ended up getting a new job on my own before they started any help for me.
