HIV-Survivor?

Hello all!
This little thing just hit me and I need to get some feedback.....

People who are diagnosed post -96 and call themselves HIV survivors.

Could I call myself a HIV survivor?
I dont feel like a survivor because death isnt imminent, at least I try to tell myself that. Maybe if I had AIDS and were in the hospital the term would fit.

It feels very strange especially since the odds are quite favorable on my side to live. I mean you could call yourself a survivor if you survived a plane crash or by some incredible luck you survived a catastrophe, me thinks.

I can understand "long term (HIV) survivor" (dx pre -96) that makes sense to me. But HIV-Survivor, what am I missing here? ???

Anyone else met people using it or do you use it yourself (for post -96 dxed)

Hello Common- I am just "living" and that is OK with me. I do fall into the LTS group but I don't really like labels. At almost 57 I have outlived most of my friends and only a few of them passed from AIDS.

I get your point - its about semantics or language.  But what does it matter to you how other people label themselves.  Like you I don't consider myself having "survived" HIV but if some other HIV+ person likes that label, have at it.  For one, they may really feel like survivors.  Or, they may not be concerned about accuracy in language.  It might mean the same to them as the term PLHIV - person living with hiv.

I consider myself a long term HIV sufferer but I try not to let the suffering get in the way of living.

The nomenclature of this website is a little convoluted as it relates to survivors,  but never the less,  why not just live your life without a label.

don't you have to actually overcome something to be a "survivor"?

After 27+ yrs of being HIV+, I haven't really "survived" HIV yet, I'm still "living with it".
However I am definitely an AIDS-survivor, as I've overcome that 3 or 4 times ;)
