SRSLY?? I mean, come on now...
« on: February 26, 2012, 11:03:00 am »
Start browsing the Forums and get an ad banner with Ronald Reagan's picture on it...wanting me to buy a fucking hat. Jeez, I'll make my own out of tinfoil, thank you very much. What an odd combination, see that ad right next to the AIDSmeds logo. What an insult to all my friends who have died and those still struggling with this disease.

One thing is certain, it's an ill-spent banner budget. If it helps fuel the site, that's a plus for us. I agree it's offensive to see his face across from the Aidsmeds logotype, but I don't believe any of us are gonna buy a USS Reagan beanie. (What's with the pesky Schiff Move Free vitamin survey that floats in while you're typing a message and then doesn't respond to clicking on Close?)

I think that's a "google ad services" generated advertisement, not something taken out specifically by the owners of the web site. It's based on a combination of other sites you've visited that have generated cookies in your browser, search history and I think demographics.

I see that banner on almost every website I go to, the funny thing is, it even shows what I was looking @ the last time I was there, boots, cars trucks, PCs  Phones etc. so yeah you'd be correct about that  ;)

Well, duh, Tim has explained that before, the last time we started bitching about the advertising. But this was particularly ironic and insulting and I posted the image so the owners of the website would have an idea what I was talking about. Sorry if no one's offended as much as me and Em, but there it is and it makes me want to puke. And I'm trying to think of what bareback porn search in a blue county has them thinking I might be interested in a Ronald Reagan cap.

Well that's how it fucking goes. Welcome to the free market.

You want this forum for gratis? Someone has to pay for it and since you're not prepared to pony up the due, it falls to advertisers.

Or just do what the rest of us do and install adblock.

Maybe Hellraiser might like this Ronald Reagan ballcap?  He's always struck me as a good conservative chap.

I will deal with this particular ad tomorrow, but please know that AIDSmeds had absolutely nothing to do with this ad being seen by some of you. That said, nobody visiting any AIDSmeds page needs to be faced with such irony. We can request that Google's AdSense not place ads from certain businesses on this site, as we have done in the past.

You also have some control in the types of Google ads you see on this site and others using this advertisement platform. If you click on the little blue icon in the upper-right-hand corner of the ad, you'll be taken to Google AdChoices introduction page. About half way down, you'll see a link to your personal Google ads preferences manager. On that page, you'll see the preferences -- based on the criteria Miss Philicia references above -- AdSense uses to customize which ads will appear on your computer screen. You can remove these or edit them, which should help.

As Tim suggests, you can opt out of these things by taking a few steps....

Tweak your ads preferences

By default, Google serves up “personalized” ads, based on search queries or on the content of your Gmail messages. For example, if you run a search for “Mobile World Congress,” Google may serve up an ad for a phone or a tablet. If you find that kind of activity too invasive (or just plain creepy), you can dig into Google’s privacy settings to disable personalized ads.

Head on over to Google’s Ad Preferences page; and in the right-hand column, under ‘Ads on Search and Gmail’, click Opt out. From there, click the Opt out button to the right, and Google will stop serving up personalized ads based on your search results.

You can also opt out of personalized ads that appear on other sites through Google’s Web ad services. In the left-hand column of the same Ad Preferences page, under ‘Ads on the Web’, click Opt out, and then click the blue Opt out button to the right.

And for anyone feeling like Polly Paranoia over Google's upcoming changes regarding privacy, you might want to take a look here

LOL, hardly.  Although I don't have anything against Reagan granted when he was in office I was still on training wheels.

I'm as conservative as you would expect any gay atheist democrat to be.

I was under the impression you would only find someone who described himself with all those of oxymoronic descriptors only in a sideshow or a book on mythology  ???

How's the facebook stalking of everyone who posts on these forums going?

Edit:  Also I don't think you know what the word "oxymoron" means.  Considering that gay is a sexual preference, atheist is a religious belief, and democrat is a political party, none of those words contradict one another meaning it isn't an oxymoron.

Just in case you need a point of reference...

Although I don't have anything against Reagan granted when he was in office I was still on training wheels.

I was a kid when Reagan was running things and still I detest(ed) him.  A bit of historical knowledge shows how much of an enemy he was to people living with HIV/AIDS.  His nasty legacy lives on.  While I don't really agree with this thread, my personal opinion of this shameful excuse for a president is that he can rot in hell for all that I care.

I'm as conservative as you would expect any gay atheist democrat to be.

My memory is kinda hazy, but didn't you say at one point that you were a fiscally conservative retardican or something to that effect?
