Title: Some days are ok, some days aren't.
Post by: ImisstheOldTimes on March 20, 2012, 08:46:45 pm
Hi, I was introduced to these forums last week. I was googling, "my dad has aids" and I saw Runnergirl's posts. I have to say I was encouraged initially but that subsided when I read her later post about his passing. :'(

My dad was diagnosed with HIV initially 3 weeks ago, infection taking place 3-5 years ago. He was hospitalized with PCP, sepsis, and extreme weakness with fatigue. Last week he was told that it was AIDS, and even though he has the PCP cleared up, he was now diagnosed with histoplasmosis. He's in a nursing home trying to rehabilitate, but it's one thing after another. My mom got tested and it came back negative. We all have cried, but not in front of him. We try to remain positive (no pun intended) for his sake and yet realistic as well. It's so hard, I remember him being a fully functional active man, and now he can barely walk. HIV has ravished the man I once knew, and continues to beat his ass with new infections like the histoplasmosis. I don't know whether to be hopeful or any real kind of easier way of life for him, he hasn't been able to start his antiretroviral meds yet, because his ID doc needs for him to be a little healthier. It's all so much at one time :(

Thanks Forest, I have read that you are dealing with this recently too. I found that trying to find as much info about HIV/AIDS has been very helpful. It's amazing how much has changed in regards to treatment especially when looking at what was available in the 80's , 90's. Keep dreaming those dreams of yours :)

Hello.
Sorry for the heavy situation.
I think you should be hopeful. If he's under the care of these doctors, he should eventually do well.  It just takes quite awhile to reconstitute everything.  Remember that the treatment for HIV is very effective.

Thanks Drew and mecch (I've read many of your posts and were very encouraged by them.) Drew, your message was very hopeful. Thank you.

Well I'm sitting in the ER awaiting my dad's arrival from the nursing home, apparently he is extremely weaker and is having trouble with diarrhea, I'm really hoping we can get him better, but I'm afraid to think anything else. :'(

My dad has a fungal mass 2 x 3 in. They think it is due to the histoplasmosis.

Still in the hospital, awaiting the passing of my father. He is unusually delirious, and is very out of it. Is this a normal thing? Today is a not so good, in fact it's a not so good week :(

That just sucks Imiss.   :(  Really sorry to hear.  I can't even imagine and I am sure it's very draining.  Virtual hugs.
