Welcome to the "Do I Have HIV?" POZ forum.

This special section of the POZ forum is for individuals who have concerns about whether or not they are HIV positive. Individuals are permitted to post up to three questions or responses in this forum.

Ongoing participation in the "Do I Have HIV?" forum (posting more than three questions or responses) requires a paid subscription, with secure payments made via PayPal.

A seven-day subscription is $9.99, a 30-day subscription is $14.99 and a 90-day subscription is $24.99.

Anyone who needs to post more than three messages in the "Do I Have HIV?" forum -- including past, present and future POZ Forums members -- will need to subscribe, with secure payments made via PayPal.

Dear All

I had a sexual encounter with a sex worker yesterday. We had oral sex (unprotected with her doing down on me) very briefly - 1 min. Then for a short time we had protected vaginal intercourse (3 min). During the intercourse my condom broke and we both realized it. I pulled out immediately (total unprotected exposure would have been 4-6 seconds). We stopped after that.

My question is, how high is the risk of getting infected in such a scenario when the partner is HIV+ (She said she is not HIV+ but i cant be sure). The other thing i wanted to know is what is a reliable detection test i can get done with the minimum window period (PCR/RNC  can be done from the 11th day onwards?). I intend to get tests for all other STDs as well

At this point of time I am really freaking out. Do you think i am over-reacting. Trying not to think about stuff.  Would appreciate any response.

Sid, in evaluating a situation we always assume the other person is HIV+. And even allowing for that you had a very low level risk for HIV. Really low.

The condom protected you until it broke. The risk for the insertive partner is significantly lower than for the receptive partner. And we're talking about a single, very brief potential exposure.

Mainly for your peace of mind you should get tested. You can do that initially at 6 weeks. Assuming you get the negative result that I am expecting, that means when you re-test at 3 months for a conclusive result, you will likely just get another negtive result.

While waiting to test you need to focus on other things in your life. It will help to pass the waiting time more easily than you may imagine is possible. And to repeat, I expect you to come out of this ok.

Thanks Andy..means a lot. I am having a complete meltdown here...encouraging words from you and the others will let me focus on other things and not be thinking of this every single moment.  An alcohol induced haze led to this first exp. with a csw...and i really really regret it:(..wracked with guilt (im in a serious relationship and am traveling on work) and the scare was leading to major depression setting in.

Anyways, i think ill try and focus on work etc... any idea on PCR/RNC etc. i would want to carry out any HIV test asap.  Thanks so much.

In my ten years doing risk assessments on this forum I have yet to see an insertive partner test positive following a condom break.
