Drug Rehab?
« on: September 09, 2015, 11:49:30 pm »
Curious to hear family/caregiver/partner experiences with their HIV+ person going to rehab? Did it improve your relationship? My brother is finally thinking about inpatient rehab and is only now sharing the depth of his addiction problems.  It seems like the drug abuse is a bigger immediate threat than HIV. What are your experiences with helping an HIV+ get clean. What worked, what didn't?

If a persons drug use is getting in the way of treatment and causing adherence issues then naturally you can expect problems, other than that I cant think of anything that makes addiction or rehab unique to living with HIV unless medical problems exist that make makes getting sober even more urgent.

Its true that drugs and alcohol sometimes plays a role in the transmission of HIV but getting sober is the same for every one, one day at a time and the proper support network. Best of luck to your brother.
