Loving the floor.
« on: May 01, 2011, 01:34:54 am »
I've been busy the last 3 days installing laminated hardwood flooring.  I could no longer live with carpet.  I did it all by myself (at my assistance) and am quite proud of myself.  A lot of people rush but I can't else it will look like shit.  As soon as I see me starting to think F...it, I know it time to walk away and regroup.  I couldn't make a living at it, but I'm proud of accomplishment.  When I do these type of projects, it's almost like Bill's with me.

Whoo-hoo! Glad to hear it... My roommate and I were talking about redoing our bedrooms in hardwood since we could get some for $0.89/ft. Sadly, that never materialized and we're still stuck with shitty carpet. :P Can't wait to see the pics. :D

I'm really impressed...good for you!
I'm afraid that I would be one of those people that start the project and end up calling a professional because I screwed it up the job! Maybe I could get the guy on DIY that works on houses!

Congrats! Home improvement is always a good thing.

And having projects to do is a great way to deal with boredom, and that depression that comes from being alone that we both understand oh too well. ;) :-*

Wolfie-

Congrats on getting the laminate down. We did our place after we moved in, as the carpeting was nasty, and with five dogs, laminate seemed the best bet. I hate carpeting anyways. It's not too hard, but you are right, you just need to take the time to think it out first. We still have to finish up the Man-Cave, but everything else is finished.

It always feels good to get home improvement projects done doesn't it? I've been working on a brick patio this week. Was planning on finishing it up today, but it is snowing, so I have to wait.

We will need photographic proof of your laminate-laying abilities. ;)

Getting everything moved back into place was the worst.  I had to carry everything down the hall to a spare room, do the floors then carry everything back.

You'd get pissed off working with me.  I take breaks whenever I start to sweat !  I figure by the end of summer, I'll have the baseboard trim back in place.  It sure is a lot of work but am so glad it's done.  Well worth the effort and the savings of doing it myself.

Good job, Wolf.  I'll be getting mine done in July (I cannot imagine doing this here queen doing that sort of labor; I'd fuck it up completely).

Great job!  Most of my house is tiled but I do have three rooms that are carpeted.  I want to one day replace those with wood floors like you're done.   If you don't mind me asking, what was the cost?

Looks good!  Redoing our kitchen, living room, and bathroom after my dx has really helped to keep my mind busy.  We put down cherry bamboo floors that we got from Sam's.  Real wood, or engineered, but snaps together.  Well, a section has started to separate for some damn reason.  It is worse in the winter and closes back up, for the most part, in warmer weather.  We have no idea what we did wrong.  Best of luck yours stays together.

We put down dark cherry, which I love, but it shows every dust bunny.  You have to clean it everyday.  I wish I would have gone lighter like yours.  I'm really liking the floors that are mixed with light and dark wood.  Wish we would have thought of that.

I didn't go with a particular product in mind.  I'm always on the hunt for a bargain.  I went to Lowe's and they had this on clearance.  It was normally $2.49/sq ft but was on clearance for $1.29/sq ft.  On top of that, I get 10% off for my military discount and also save 7% for having a tax exempt account.  (I use my brother's military discount and he's the manager of our local VFW)  My total cost was under $200 for the entire project.

edited to add; with gas prices at an all time high, I probably should add about $30 for that.

You really did save yourself some money on the deal.  I had a room done in my old house back in 2002 and it ran me about $700.  Great job!

Thanks for all the compliments.  I'm really paying for it now though (physically).  And I'm not cheap.  Bill and I always had that debate.  He readily paid retail for everything.   I'm thrifty!  I'd rather waste money on clothes.

We've been getting 10% off coupons for Lowes good for anything and even special orders at the Post Office.  They have these moving packets that contain coupons for several companies, but Lowe's has the 10% off.  They usually don't keep them out, so you usually have to go up to the window at the Post Office and ask for them.  They have saved us at least $2,000 over the last few years.  Redo a kitchen or bathroom and it adds up to big savings.  Even if you buy smaller items but several times a year, it would add up to use the coupons.

We also saved money on our appliances because Home Depot had them cheaper, so Lowe's matched their price plus 10%, plus the 10% off from the coupon.  I love a good deal!  I always ask for a discount for everything and often get it--carpet, granite, plants, furniture, etc.  Most places expect that people will ask for a discount or better deal as I like to say.  I realize they may fix that into the price.

I think we should start a thread on the subject of deals.  I know many special ways to receive discounts and would love more.  Example, I LOVE Bath And Body Works.  If you simply call or e-mail them, they'll send you a 20% off coupon for your entire purchase.  Their semi-annual sales are every Janurary and June.  With 30-70 % off everything plus you use the 20% off the final cost.   I love their warming oils and buy enough to last for an entire year.  If you buy winter scents and save them for the following season, you'll save a fortune.

There are those coupon/deal experts that go on the Today Show and say that if you write just about any company and tell them you like their products, they will usually send you coupons for either free stuff or discounts.  I haven't tried that yet.  I know one person who is a serious coupon clipper.  She often saves 50% or more on her grocery bill.  But, she says it is a lot of work.

I think that is a great idea since most of us are living on fixed incomes and trying like hell to stretch every dollar.
By the way your floor looks great! Think you can install a bathtub for me?
