New on Atripla, also new here

Hi guys,
I 'm new here, i´m from Barcelona (Spain). I was diagnosed 3 years ago, and was fine until now. Now, i started atripla, 5 days ago, and yep, the 1st night/day was as expected: Hell. I´m no doing that bad now, progressively, but atripla is been approved just now in europe, so i wonder if in US, any of you, could tell me about his experience. When do u start to feel yourself again? does it provoke lipo? Is it reasonable that i start working next monday (that's 11 days after the 1st pill)?
Thanks a lot for any answer, tip, advise, comment....

Hey David -- Welcome to the forums.  I just started meds too, although I'm not on Atripla, so I can't really offer any advice regarding your side-effects.  But I'm sure there's somebody on here who can give you some info.  Hope that you continue to do better with each passing night...

Thanks a lot for the feedback :)
I hope someone can post how is he/she doing with atripla as a 1st medication (side effects, bodychanges..)
as i said, in europe has just started...this month! so, no european forums can help me or guide me. However, my doc in Barcelona is an especialist in lipo and said that Atripla causes no distrophia-at all. That's what she stated. Also my doc on London (where i live half of the year), said the same.

So, please, guys, be nice and post any experience. It will be very much appreciated ;D

I'm glad you started with Atripla and hope you have better luck than me.
I was on atripla for a month and had to stop. I loved that it was only 1 pill but I was dizzy and sleepy all the time. The doctor said sustiva is not good for me so now im taking reyataz and truvada.

lamento mucho tus resultados con Atripla, but please, cross fingers for me, as i find it so complicated switching from meds to meds...I also feel sleepy and dizzy (and i have to start next monday >:() but hopefully it will work...

Hi David, and welcome to the forums from a fellow Spaniard!

I'm sorry I can't help you about atripla, I'm still treatment naive. But anyway, even though atripla has just been approved in Spain it's nothing more than sustiva + truvada bundled together, so anything you can find out about the other two would also be applicable to atripla. From I what I've read, I believe atripla (or sustiva + truvada) is not specially linked to lipo, its most common side effects seems to be dizziness and vivid dreams.

Basically, I began HAART with Atripla since Aug 06. Usually, I take it anywhere between 9-midnight depending on my schedule. My VL went undetectable almost since as soon as I started and has remained so. My first night was quite enjoyable: hallucinations, wild dreams. I still get the 'buzz' 3-4 times a week. Never know when it's gonna happen. It's suggested to take without food. I've done both food and empty stomach. But that's me and again it's working for me. I sleep well and do not feel any effects in the morning.

So, I"ve had no problems taking Atripla. It has elevated my cholesterol and tryglycerides levels but I take Liptor to keep those lower. I've noticed in crease of weight in my abdominal section but cannot say I have lipodistrophy.

If you're trying it and it works without problem, it pretty ideal to me, only one pill a day.  I have never missed a dose and suggest that you try not miss either.

Thank u all, especially Yakamein for the whole report. My Doc said i would instantly put 4 or 5 extra kilos,but not as a distrophia, just because of eating a bit more ::). In my case, since i´m only 65 kilos, 5 more won't killl me.
I was wondering if someone who started around 2006, has experienced any body changes 2 years later.
Thanks again. Is great to be able to be in this forum ;D

Hi David, welcome!

I take sustiva & truvada, which are the medications in atripla combined into one pill.  I preferred to stay on them separately and not switch to Atripla because I have never taken any other medications and have always experienced some sort of side effect for 2years now.  Remember:  everyone can react differently to medications, so what is true for me may not be true for you.  Although with a recent post I have read it seems like I do have a lot in common with others.  Now that I have done more research and read many many posts, I feel more confident about making a switch from sustiva to viramune, which I will be discussing with my doc at the end of the month.  The meds have provided great results as far as my VL and CD4 so I have suffered with difficulties in sleeping, feeling fatigue all day, weight gain with difficulty seeing weight loss when changing diet and exercise, disturbing dreams - I can even feel and smell in my dreams - I have not been able to hold even a part-time job for any length of time and have been on disability.

I know this does not reflect all that well on Atripla, but side effects do vary and you may do well on it.  I suspect that you will see great changes in your blood work. 

If you can take your meds at night with food, you may feel better in the morning with breakfast and a cup of coffee/tea.  Some caffeine is a MUST with me and my fatigue in the morning. 

I hope you have a better experience and try to stick it out if possible.  There are some great links on the home page of aidsmeds.com regarding all kinds of meds and suggestions for tolerating them.

I've not been on Atripla.  I have been on Sustiva, but couldn't tolerate it.  I basically just wanted to welcome you to the forums.  Good luck.

Hi David, and although I have been a stranger here, welcome anyway.

I started on Combivir and Kaletra, a solid regimen and I went U/D right away.  At that time the talk was that it was the PI's and the AZT in combivir which were threats to cause lypo, so I switched to Atripla, but now the word is Sustiva  is a major suspect.  At any rate, coming from a long time stoner, I welcome the highs I got, and still get on occasions.  The thing about the Sustiva and Truvada elements of Atripla, is that they have a fairly long shelf life in your body.  If for some freakish reason you miss a dose, or are extremely late, don't freak out.  That being said, you need to plan on taking your med(s) every day religiously. 95% is the rule to prevent resistance.

As far as side effects, I have really none other than the occasional buzz when I take it with my steak and toddy. I've shown no signs of lypo, and have in fact filled out. It beats  the diarrhea that I had on the other combo..

Is my 11 day and i´m not feeling that bad, actually. Some fatigue, but increasingly better (fingers crossed anyway). I guess, my concern is more about lypo and body changes in the future (? ???)

Can't really give you any advice, as I have never been on Atripla. I am on the other non-nuke Viramune. Just wanted to say hello and welcome you.

oh yes,...You may want to stay away from high fat content foods, several hours before taking Atripla. This may help in minimizing the dreams , from the Sustiva portion. Also make sure to drink plenty of water daily.

I am starting Atripla this evening and this is my first med experience.
I have to admit that Im a little nervous, but its nice to know the Docs
in your area(s) say ther is no lypo side effect.
I hope you continue to feel better and better each day and wish you the

Hello David. I have been on Sustiva+ Truvada (the same components of Atripla) for about 15 months now and haven't noticed any changes in my body fat distribution whatsoever.

I did feel a bit spaced out the first few weeks, but now I only have vivid dreams every night, but they don't really bother me. Sometimes I do enjoy them!

I have asked to switch to Atripla and I have an appointment in a week to start with the new pills. As it is really the same as taking Sustiva+Truvada I don't expect any change.

I have NEVER missed a dose and never been late in taking my medications. I hope you'll achieve a similar result as that's the most important thing you can do to keep in good health. Also try to eat healthy as much as you can.

i was lucky on my first day on atripla.  I did not experience anything. It just kinda was a sleeping pill to me.  I have been on it for a while.  Started as truvanda and sustiva and switched to atripla when they introduced it.  i started with 135 cd4's and am now at 841 cd4's two years later.  Will stay on it until I decide to have a baby and will switch back to it after delivery.  I have no side effects now whatsoever.

 :)Welcome!  My partner and I are just now coming up one year of treatment on Atripla.  This is what I can offer-  I follow dosing to the letter,  two hours after a meal and at least one one before I eat anything again-  eating intensifies the effects.  I had a hard time with the dreams in the beginning but now nothing out of the ordinary.
I have noticed no body changes in fat, etc.-  darn!  It is all still there!!!  My VL went down to under 45 almost immediately-  now we are working on getting the cd4 counts up-  i always take my pill at night before bedtime.
I do get the woozy's for a little bit when I take the pill and am going out- but it IS manageable/
Neither my parnter or I have missed a single dose in all this time, it must be a record somewhere!

Best of luck to you-  keep on the meds, and check in with your new friends.

Hi again,
I can't thank u enough for so much feed back about the meds...
I finished today my 3rd week on Atripla, and it was tough all last week going to work in a new place, as it took so much off my energy. I also realised this: I was doing fine and then, when I had a fight 1 day with my partner, which lasted  24 stressing hours--, i noticed it multiplied a lot the side effects, mostly the fatigue....I guess is normal (?)
I hope this one who started with atripla,and meds in general, last week, is doing fine and let us know :)
