It would be nice if a big name, a REALLY big name, would rally behind this call to a unified effort. For example, Sarkozy, Obama, or the Pope.  (Yeah, when hell freezes over, the Pope.) Queen Elizabeth. I dunno, someone who can put pressure for the combined effort and help broker the negotiation between interested parties.  Bill Clinton has done a lot but he's a bit of a has been, maybe not powerful enough.

Mecch,

The Pope has been a proponent to life and the dignity for it. I am surprised that you gave him the dignity and considered him an important person. I guess we have to give you credit for that. Not everyone on this site is against the Church and some of use actually worship there. The Pope does not want people to suffer from HIV/AIDS more than anyone else does, and I take offense when people bash the Vicar of Christ, and assume he does not care about people affected with this illness.

People bash him because he'd rather they get infected than use a condom.  That's not a Culture of Life.  That doesn't necessitate being anti-Christianity, just anti-his interpretation.

Miss Philicia,

The Pope does not want anyone to get infected and if people "bash"  him because of that they do not understand the teachings of the Magestarium. Its not my point here to hate on Mecch or anyone else with a differant opinion than mine, but I wish we would respect everyone and remember that some people in this forum are Catholic, and believe it or not some of us do love the Church and want to follow Her teachings. Its my opinion, if you bring up a group of people that you think might make a impact on rallying an effort in the cause to help fight HIV/AIDS you should respect the people that you list and not try to "bash" one of the named people just because you might have a prejudice against any group or religion.

I understand that this isn't the forum to discuss this issue, but I had to say something because It rubbed me the wrong way. ;D

So basically you're saying that Church teachings are more important than advocating condom use, just so I get this correct.

Magisterium, or magisterium in Latin. Otherwise it sounds like a videogame.

(edited to add that I thought the Latin spelling was difference, bad Catholic boy I was.

Also, it's redundant and even wrong to say "teachings of the Magisterium" as the word refers to the teaching authority of the Pope and Bishops in the Roman Catholic Church)

The Pope is indeed a very important person in the world.  The Pope and the Catholic church do much good in the world.  However, he and the church doctrine against condom use are not helpful and in fact quite harmful - there are epidemics of many sexually transmitted diseases, many  times transmitted by lovely people who have faith and yet are human and make mistakes.  I truly believe it would be WONDERFUL if the Pope were to be a diplomat and help put world resources together. I truly believe that there is NO CHANCE we will ever see this Pope do that.  Its not slander of the Pope to say that. Though i apologize for the expression "when hell freezes over" since it does come from christian culture. I used it to mean - no chance!

Funny how when the word "cure' is brought up ....people start acting all goo goo and all. What is it with this word CURE.  Are we so afraid of it because we will need to move on to other issues?  Euh....like death and yes...spirituality (if you choose).  A cure will not solve ALL issues in our lives...guess that's why we ARE alive.

I think that as a community ....and society at large..we are terribly afraid of a cure....and the meaning this would have to us all...both as a collective and as individuals who have identified with this disease for so long (think of all the N.G.O's).

All I can say is grow up people....

I know that this post has now gone completely off topic.  Just wanted to bring this up to everyone's attention......

Back to the topic please.  I do want to be cured AND saved .  Just being careful not to mix up the issues too much. :)
