help!!! symptoms 3 months after Chicken pox
« on: September 23, 2006, 05:39:54 am »
I've been under stress and fatigue now. It's unbearable!!!

(M/25)I had unprotected sex and oral with a lady of unknown hiv status in June. Subsequently on the second day i developed flu. 2 days later, i caught chicken pox from my younger brother. A few of the lesions are still tender until now. On the 8th week after the exposure, i notice reddening and scaling on my face and dandruff is more then normalplus itchiness on my body. The doctor diagnose that as Seborrheic dermatitis and gave me antihistamine and lotions At that time i took an ELISA test which comes out as negative after 3 days. But soon i developed fever, muscle and joint pains. Next ELISA test came at week 10 and i did a full blood report. The ELISA resut is negative but my blood test shows some elevation in my lymphocyte count and decrease in Basophil count both near the border line. Creatinine level in my urine is also elevated +1 but the gp mention it's nothing as i'm dehydrated and might be some bacteria infection. These few days, i developed cold hands, feet and is afraid of cold. I have not been eating well these few weeks due to the stress. Now there's pain on the left side of my neck and i feel stiff all the time.On top of that, there is also pain on my laft chest. I notified the lady and she did the STD+Elisa test at week 12 of our exposure and is also negative. PLEASE HELP!!! i'm scared to death.

This is not an HIV concern. You have a reliable negative test. You can not diagnosis HIV by symptoms and your symptoms came on to early and have lasted to long. See your doctor since this NOT an HIV concern.

I did see 6 gp's, 3 blood count test, 2 Elisa in these few weeks. One of them told me that the conclusive result of HIV can only be done after 6 months. I read online that the HIV window period of people with impaired immune system may be longer then 3 month. In my case, my symptoms only come out 1 by 1 after 7 weeks. Please advice.

No you don't have to wait out to 6 months for a conclusive test. The CDC's conclusive test results was changed from 6-3 months in 2001. As for an immune disorder, you would have known you have had it way before now. You are conclusively negative.

Mad, did you test finally at 10 weeks or 12/13 or was it your lady friend who tested negative at the latter point? I ask this only because you remain so concerned about the issue.

If you haven't tested at 13 weeks then I recommend doing that just for your own peace of mind. I certainly expect you will continue to test negative.

As for all the various symptoms you are worried about. Those are something for you to sort out with your doctor. There is not anything in anyway HIV specific about them, but then as you have already been told neither the presence nor the absence of symptoms is ever the way to know about HIV status accurately.

Not the least you need to learn from this experience. You can without fear of HIV have intercourse with as many partners as you like whatever their HIV status, as long as you always use a latex condom everytime. No exceptions.

I don't see this as an HIV situation but as I said go ahead and test again at 13 weeks and pick up another negative result for your collection.

Cheers,

I did the last ELISA testing in week 10. The lady did the testing on week 12.
All's negative except her anti0EBV-VCA(IGA) is positive. I'm still waiting for my STD/FBC report and my current symptom is numbness in my hands and feet. I notice some days ago that my soles are abit yellowish. Can someone pls tell me what is anti0EBV-VCA(IGA) and is there any relationship to the symptoms i'm having??? My hands and feet are so cold during day time even thought there's sweat. It's hot here in Southeast Asia but i'm just cold.  :'(

Mad,

This woman is hiv negative and she can't transmit what she doesn't have. If you need the three month test to ease your mind, have it done, but don't be surprised when it also comes back negative.

Symptoms or the lack of symptoms mean nothing when it comes to hiv infection. See your doctor about your physical problems because whatever is going on, it has nothing to do with hiv. You could be missing something important by focusing on something you couldn't possibly have.

Does having chicken pox put me into the criteria of compromised immune system??? I have flu after the exposure and chicken pox then.

Mad, I agree completely with Ann.

I'll also add the caveat that your HIV status and your health are your responsibility. Your partner would have been well within her rights telling you to sod off in relation to her HIV status. Hopefully you won't find yourself in this position again but if you do it's your responsibility to check out your own status and not your partner's.

I certainly expect you will continue to test negative.

Thanks Andy, Ann and Rapid,
I really appreciate the attention you guys give me. Is there any chance of getting infected with EBV showing these sort of symptoms ??? I did some checking on the positive test she had for anti0EBV-VCA(IGA) and can it be possible that HIV-ELISA will show false negative result when people have EBV or Mono???Pairing with recent infection with chicken pox, will these increase the window period for HIV??  ???

Hopefully i can get my CBC with STD by tomorrow.
I will go for an ELISA again after the 13th week.

Mad,

You need to talk to your doctor about the chickenpox and EBV and whatnot. You should also be aware that chickenpox is a lot tougher on adults than it is on children. You could even have something called post viral syndrome - both EBV and chickenpox are viruses.

But we cannot diagnose you here - you simply MUST see your doctor to get your questions answered.

All we can tell you here is that with your ten week negative and your partner's twelve week negative, you're more likely to win the lottery with a ticket you found lying in the street than have any of your troubles be related to hiv.

Now get to your doctor and find out what, if anything, is really going on with your body.

Hi guys, Did my HIV-ELISA and EBV-VCA IgA at 14W4D. All negative though still have some symptoms. My brother who passed the chicken pox to me went for blood test too. Seems that he's also having some infection till now(high lymphocytes). My partner did a full health screen too and is much more healthy then me. Seems that i can have a peace of mind at least until the next 3 months confirmatory test.

Thanks guys for the support given. Will always be faithfull and practise safe sex. You guys are great, i'll spread the message that symptoms r not reliable to get on with. Test and Education of safe sex is the best tool against HIV.

mad,

I take it "14W4D" means fourteen weeks, four days? If so, you are conclusively negative for hiv and you do not need further testing over the incident that worried you. You only need to test again if it is part of a regular, routine annual or semi-annual sexual health care check up.

You are hiv negative. Use condoms for intercourse with someone whose hiv status you don't know and you'll stay that way.

hi guys,
I know i'm bit of a worry wart.
It's 150 days post exposure now and still experiencing symptoms though some has subside. My skin condition is terribly dry and sometimes i can see redness below my skin. I was also down with flu, chest pain in 3rd week of October.
A skin specialist diagnost me with eczema on 10th Nov.
I told her about my risk and of the 3 months testing, still she mentioned of another confirmative testing at 6 months.(maybe she sees the symptoms as something)
As for the EBV test, she does not encourage me to test at all.
I will be facing my exams soon early next month and is still keeping a positive mindset.
What can i do, these few months of remorse and worrying is still continuing when i think of my health.
Seems that i can do nothing till my confirmation on next month.

Mad,

You've already had your confirmation, at fourteen weeks, four days. You are hiv negative, period, end of story.

Eczema is common and has nothing to do with hiv. It often has to do with food allergy/intolerance. I would suggest seeing a nutritionist.

And as for the flu - it's flu season!

You do not have hiv.

Thanks Ann and Rapid,
I'll be really glad to put all worrying behind the 14 weeks negative test.
It is the government GP and skin specialist who warrant my 6 months testing due to symptoms i'm still experiencing. They all brush off testing for EBV by reasoning 'there's nothing u can do about it even if u r infected'.
I have a feeling that they want another testing to conclusively eliminate the threat of HIV before looking into other possibilities.
My partner(girlfriend) is also experiencing rashes and itchiness now.
I'm under intense pressure because of this...

Mad ... if I may say, the emotional symptom of guilt may be THE most important symptom to examine on your list.  When the body is under the "HIV microscope", simple everyday changes are suddenly new, major symptoms.  Unfortunately, the words you see on the screen from everyone telling you that this is NOT HIV may feel better momentarily, but they are just little whispers amidst the screaming trumpets of guilt.  The good news is that if the mind is powerful enough to create all of this (which it is) ... then it is strong enough to overcome it as well.  I wasted three months of my life allowing my fears of HIV to completely consume me - it sounds like you've been wasting precious time as well.  We can never get that time back.  Perhaps you should spend some time trying to let this go ... it's not easy, but I believe you can do it if you choose.

You have reliably tested negative for HIV. You are HIV negative. Period. End of story.

Whatever your mind is telling you otherwise about your symptoms doesn't change that fact-based reality.

You need to discuss with your doctor and perhaps a dermatologist as well what the symptoms are about. This is not an HIV situation and we cannot diagnose your symptoms here.

Good luck in getting it sorted out in the proper setting.

mad,

Yeah, right. When did you become a doctor? Because only a doctor can diagnose OHL, and they normally need to take a biopsy to be certain.

You are hiv negative. Period. End of story. If you continue to worry about OHL, see your doctor or dentist. If you need a time out to encourage you to get the face-to-face help you need with your issues, that can be arranged. There's nothing more we can do for you here.

I have no one to turn to. Even the doctor wants a test at month 6.
My throat is burning hot with white tongue, sweating from the evenings, my inner elbows and legs is just itchy with spots . Just had monospot, CMV, HCV test today.
Felt giddy after having my blood drawn.
I'm very afraid. The lady friend keeps on avoiding my question of her previous results(i think she lied about the test) and my girlfriend who was tested at week 6 is showing symptoms after having sex with me.
Argg. Should not have unprotected sex with her after receiving my month 5 negative ELISA test.
What can i do??? :( I'm breaking

I have lost weight at around 10 kg ever since these few months. More red dots are surfacing and i'm tired all day long. I really hope someone can help me. The doctors are just doing 'wait and see'. The lab technician told me of patient seroconverting at 6 months, mentioning by a strong strain that weakens the body tremendously. Then she mention of testing out to 1 and a half year for certain people.
Facing with my gradually poor health, i'm more freak out. Is it because of my chicken pox..??  I'm living in South East Asia where there is alot of raining. I'm having flu during the day everyday. When night comes the flu will just go off and i won't feel that cold. My temperature now is at 37.3 degree celcius.

I'm facing a big uncertainty in my future now. i should say i'm very tired and depressed and don't know what to do.
I'm experiencing tons to symptoms these 2 weeks. Will be testing for month 6 again though i don't have the courage.  The technicians where i tested at mention of seeing people converting in 6 months because of strong strain and the body is weak from that strain. I'm afraid of that, there is no one here i can allay my fears to. I should have listened to my skin specialist advice not to have unprotected sex for up to 6 months. i fear to have gotten her into this risk.  During daytime i got flu, evening and night sweating. just felt not right about my body. these nearly 6 months is hell for me.  :'(i'm losing courage day by day. when i think of my girlfriend i will crywith the fear of losing her.

HIV is certainly character-building. It's made me see all of the shallow things we cling to, like ego and vanity. Of course, I'd rather have a few more T-cells and a little less character. Randy Shilts

sorry Ann,
i don't mean to. i'm running out of options now. HIV is a stigma in Asian society, that is why i'm facing so much problem. i don't know who to face to and some doctors here are also bias when one mention about hiv, testing and so. my problem now is fear... :'(

Have anyone experience or seen a negative ELISA at month 5 turning positive at month 6 especially with all the symptoms. This is my biggest concern now.

It is, literally, impossible.  Not on this planet, anyway.  The longer you persist in believing you have HIV, the longer you are wasting time not pursuring the right path to determine what it is that is making you ill.  You need better opinions and a better diagnostician than your current doctor is providing -- so find another.   This is my first, and last, post to you.  Best of luck.

My latest update!!!

RISK HISTORY : 1) Unprotected penile vaginal sex, oral with unknown status female twice per day.
                       2) Had multiple protected sex partners known of high risk behaviour.

Personal problem :   1) Extremely worried of being infected with HIV 1,2.
                            2) Scared to death of transmitting the disease to girlfriend.
                            3) Terrifying symptoms after last encounter together with chicken pox.

Psychological problem:   1)Depression, anxiety
                                  2)Phobic of HIV.

Testing history        :1) Baseline testing in JUne ( CBC, VDRL, HEPATITIS A,B , HIV1,2 )
                             2) HIV 1,2  at 8, 10, 14, 22 weeks
                             3) 2 CBC,  herpes1,2 , cly, genorr, hep B, EBV IgA, VDRL ...

Lastly: CBC, VDRL, HBV, HCV, CMV-IgG, Monospot and HIV1,2 AT 6 months.

Results :  NON-REACTIVE/NEGATIVE @ 6 months (except for CMV which 8o% of the population has)

Total lab visit : 10 times

Conclusion: Looking back the 6 months, i noticed how stupid am i for giving in to anxiety and not following instructions of u guys in AIDSMEDS. It's really a case of excessive testing, wasting of resource and time. I'll seek treatment for my anxiety.
