Dear All,

As we celebrate the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHO) on May 17th, Gay Kenya is calling for the ''promotion of a large and diverse agenda of human rights that is inclusive of anti-discrimination and equality'' from the Government and the citizens of Kenya.

IDAHO for Kenya is a time to reflect for the gay community, as the primary beneficiaries of this day, on their marginalization and in effect, discrimination from different quarters and how best this worrying trend can be curtailed. Generally, IDAHO also resonates with other marginalized and discriminated groups of persons e.g. women, adolescent girls, young boys, people living with albinism, the physically challenged, pastoralists and nomads and many others who, due to one factor or a multiple of them, are routinely subject to hate, stigma and exlcusion.

Gay Kenya therefore wishes that promotion and enjoyment of the human rights of all persons, regardless of anything, should be the calling card during this day. More specifically, however, is that anti-discrimination and equality be pertinent values and ingrained virtues that all Kenyans can adopt, exercise (daily) and be proud of. IDAHO offers that opportunity.

Several events are being planned in Kenya's major towns - Nairobi and Kisumu. In Nairobi, organisers have planned a launch of a book on LGBT and the discrimination they face by the Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC). In the afternooon, a public debate will be held at the GoDown Arts Center. In Kisumu, IDAHO will feature a presentation at the Duke of Breeze Hotel and later, a community event day (fashion show, dancing, music and pageant).

Please find our press release for IDAHO 2011.

I wish you all a wonderful and charismatic IDAHO 2011!
