« on: October 25, 2009, 12:00:12 pm »
After taking vitamin supplements then dropping them for two months i have decided to take them again on a permanent basis.
I will take 2 x omega 3 , 1 x multivit with minerals, and from what i have read the most important of all for people with hiv vitamin d and calcium supplements.
Is there anything else you think is important not on my list? and also whats the reccomended daily dose of calcium and vitamin d,thanks.

There isn't really a general consensus among doctors on which supplements to take, except on a good multi-vitamin.

One thing that has gained a lot of acceptance is selenium. Make sure your multi-vitamin contains it. The best dose is 200 micrograms, and the form should be l-selenomethionine which is the most bioavailable.

For vitamin D, see if you can get your blood level checked. That will help you determine how much to take.

There are a whole bunch of other supplements that people take, including myself, but they aren't as popular, and the studies have been smaller. Here is something of interest (though now dated).

I was unable to find convincing studies on the mushrooms, so I don't take them.
I tried some expensive AHCC before and it definitely didn't help. No more for me.

There is information on shitake mushrooms here from Cancer.org, which allegedly are used to build up the immune system of cancer pages.  Note that this webpage lists some studies but does not actually take a position pro- or against.

A warning: I've personally used a mushroom capsule called "Host Defense" twice and had to stop each time after 3 days because I found they made me very light-headed (all day).  These mushrooms are said to also lower your blood pressure, which isn't good for somebody like me that already has low blood pressure.
