As stated repeatedly the goal is 95% adherence.

I've missed a day before, but not very often, maybe once or twice a year before I came up with a system.  I put a 7 day supply of my meds in one bottle (I only take them once a day)  I refill them on the same night, say Sunday, so I can look and see how many days I have left to know if I took them or not, which is sometimes an issue.

I think in general what I've heard is if you missed a dose skip it and continue normally. I guess it depends on what med it is.  I recently heard that for most meds you have a 12 hour window to take them if you forgot them.

How is missing a 1/2 a day burning through your 5%?  Missing one full day in a year you are still exceeding a 99.99% adherence rate.

I had to chuckle when I read that. ;D

If you worry about missing a dose when you're on a night out - or even perhaps if you're still out when the night becomes the morning after - I would suggest you keep at least a day's worth of meds on you. You never know when you might need them. You can get handy little cylindrical med containers that attach to your key ring. They're available in shops and all over the internet. Check Amazon, for example.

To make sure your "carry-with" meds aren't going out of date due to not using them, you can put fresh ones in every week when you refill your pill tray. Just put the ones from the carrry-with container into one of the slots for the week and put fresh ones in the carry-with container.

My bf always carries a day or two worth of meds with him - but he just keeps them in a bottle in his jacket. I always carry a few doses of my meds with me too, even though they're not hiv meds. Yet. :)

That's a good idea.  I just bought one online from Ebay for 99 cents.  It's from China and won't get here for about 3 weeks, but that's fine.  I checked and some look very small, I hope I can get 4 tablet size pills and a small vitamin in it, if not I can use it to carry an Imodium and Tylenol with me.

Great idea Ann. I keep one in my wallet but that's a pain. The key chain thing would be awesome.
What is expiration on these pills typically?
I usually rotate my extra stash to the pill tray and stash the new ones. I just was never sure how long we have on these pills. Thsnks

The expiration date will always be printed somewhere on the bottle (or box if some of your meds come in bubble strips - and it's usually stamped along one of the edges of the strips as well). Check your bottles - it's often in fairly small print. Normally it's on the label, but sometimes it's stamped somewhere on the bottle itself, like on the bottom.

It's usually ok to use meds that are a few weeks past the expiration date - I would draw the line at about three to four months, depending on the condition the meds were kept in (ie heat) and whether or not the container was sealed.

It's good that you rotate your stock. This is important when you have a back-up supply.

PS - If you're keeping meds in your wallet or even on a keychain where it's in a pocket close to your body, it's important that you're either regularly using them, or switching them out for fresh ones. Your body heat won't do them any good when exposed to that heat for extended periods of time. Switching them weekly, or at least every two weeks, is highly recommended.

Aw, diddums, doesn't anyone ever invite you home after a night on the town these days, now that you're no longer IN YOUR TWENTIES?

After waking up one morning in the South Bronx with a live chicken running around in my trick's apartment, I began a habit of only hosting boys in my own apartment.

Anyway, they get kicked out before actual sleep time.

ps: Of course, now that I'm an odd-toed ungulate I no longer have sex so this discussion is irrelevant (not to mention I'm terribly offended that some of you insist on mocking the handicapped).

So you're either in the horse family, the tapir family, or the rhinoceros family. Which is it? Or are you trying to tell us you're hung like a horse? Or that you're an ass? I'm sooooo confuzzled! I just might have to turn my computer off for a while and go get something to eat to raise my blood sugar so I can think more clearly. Either that or go partake in some Highland Poacher so I can forget all about it.... I think the latter just might win.

how bad is this really?

Of course, no harm at all.

Actually, in the pros and cons discussion with my doc (he and I prefer once daily), he mentionned that one of the pros of twice-daily is that is you miss one time you only miss a half dose...
