Head Cold
« on: September 26, 2007, 01:52:39 pm »
So the last few days my sinues have been stuffy and my ears have been popping and am thinking that I have a head cold.  Since this is my first one since being diagnosed what should I be doing?  I already drink plenty of water, and take Vitamin C twice a day.  Is there some over the counter drugs I can take?  Or should I do something else?  Any advice is appreciated!

Hugs,
Ryan

In my opinion...you can only treat the symptoms. If the symptoms persist and get worse ( you start to run a fever) then you have to see a doctor.
1. Take two aspirin and call me in the morning.  (The tried and true approach)
2. Congestion: AlkaSeltzer Plus ( my favorite) or your favorite decongestant
3. Cough: cough syrup ( my favorite is Robitussin Expectorant)
4. Sleeping: Nyquil or whatever you like
5. Drink lots of liquids, water especially
6. Natural supplements such as those recommended in Chinese medicine are another way to go.
7. Acupuncture

Sounds a lot like allergies to me with fluid building up in your ears.

Drink plenty of warm liquids to keep the crap in your head moving.

Steam, esp if there a steam room with lots of horny men around

Don't blow your nose unless you can't help it, as it pushes goop back into your Eustachean tobes which can get infected easily.

Use "ear candles" if you can find them at a natural food store, etc

Douche your sinuses with a warm saline solution:  4pz water, 1/4 tsp salt, 1/4 tsp baking soda
I keep a small squirt-tip plastic bottle with pre-mixed solution year-round and nuke it at like 20% power for 30 seconds when needed, swirling the bottle to even out the temp and testing drops on my skin before use.  Tilt head back, squirt saline down one nostril til you think you'll choke, tilt head to see if you can make it come out the other nostril (wow... isn't this sexy?) then repeat going the other direction.  **Following a douche is one okay time to blow your nose.

Ryan,

Hope your feeling better. I always used Alka-Seltzer cold medication, for any kind of head cold, or congestion that I had.( I agree with Bear on this) It always seemed to work good for me. It's the stuff you drop in water, and you let it disolve.

By the way, ther are a lot of people where I work at currently having mild head colds, I had one last month. Lasted a few days. Must be that time of the year...

I'm also having problems with my sinuses.  But I'm an ex-smoker, so I think I did the damage to my sinuses long ago.  Also, especially one side bothers me more than the other, from having it crushed.  I drink a lot of water.  I don't overload on vitamin C.  I suppose that doesn't hurt, though, since everything your body doesn't use, you pea out anyway.   I was just reading an article about people with HIV and sinus problems.  I wish I could remember where it was, so I could post the link.  It was pretty interesting.  If I remember where it was at, I'll post the link.
