Concerned about symptoms
« on: April 16, 2014, 05:54:10 pm »
Hi all,
I'm a 26 year old male in what I believe to be good health. In December of last year I made the mistake of having unprotected sex with a female of unknown status. 3 weeks after I came down with a cough that distressed me. I visited my doctor and he decided to administer an HIV test along with a CBC to check for any abnormalities. The result came back negative and all the values from CBC were within normal range. I then tested at 7 weeks post exposure using a 3rd generation test which also returned negative. I knew that I was still in the window period so at 15 weeks post exposure I visited my doctor to test for all std's including a 4 generation combo HIV test and to also have another CBC done. The results came back negative for all std's. Although, my WBC had fallen from 8,000 cells/ml to 5,300 cells/ml. This did not concern my doctor as he said that it falls within normal range.

The reason I'm still concerned is because throughout this whole event I have experienced symptoms that can be attributed to HIV infection which have not subsided. Those symptoms being fungal infections throughout my whole body(primarily on groin), low back and leg pain which occurs when I lay down and sit, acid reflux 24/7 that causes nausea, and a sudden development of eye floaters. Moreover, I worried that my suddenly low WBC is because of an HIV infection.

I understand that symptoms cannot be used to diagnose but they are a cause for concern for me.  Is it possible that I have yet to produce antibodies to the infection? I'm considering taking a standard ELISA in 1 month which will be 5 months post exposure. Your responses are greatly appreciated.

Accept the fact that you don't have HIV. You have a conclusive negative test result outside the window period. You do not need any further testing.

Hi, Ann and Jeff,

Can you address my concerns? I believed I could move past this but my continual symptoms are worrying me. The acid reflux I've been experiencing has only gotten worse. My gullet actively burns after meals. Also, after every meal I consume I become nauseous. Furthermore, for the past week I've suddenly been getting extremely tired in the afternoons to the point that I feel intoxicated.
Could these symptoms be caused by an HIV infection that my tests haven't detected or is it possible that my body has yet to make antibodies? Teak has addressed this but I feel as though I need your guys' astute reassurance. My 15 week post exposure test was a 4th generation test.

You are conclusively negative and if these symptoms bother you, please consult with your doctor.
