Just in case you weren't feeling too old today, this will certainly change things.. Each year the staff at Beloit College  in Wisconsin puts together a list to  try to give the faculty a sense of the mindset of this year's incoming freshmen. Here's this year's list:

The people who are starting college this fall across the nation were born in 1989.

They are too young to remember the space    shuttle blowing up  .

Their lifetime has always included AIDS.

Bottle caps have always been screw off and plastic.

The CD was introduced the year they were born.

They have always had an answering machine.

They have always had cable.

They cannot fathom not having a remote control.

Jay Leno has always been on the Tonight Show.

Popcorn has always been cooked in the microwave.

They never took a swim and thought about Jaws.

They can't imagine what hard contact lenses are.

They don't know who Mork was or where he was from.

They never heard: "Where's the Beef"

 Or "I'd walk
    a mile for a Camel"

OR, "de plane, Boss, de
   plane."

They do not care who shot J. R. and have no idea who J. R. even is.

McDonald's never came in Styrofoam containers.

They don't have a clue how to use a typewriter.

Do you feel old yet Pass this on to the other old fogies on your list. Notice the larger type, that's for those of you who have trouble reading...
So have a nice day!!!!! It is good to have friends who know about these things and are still alive and kicking!!!!

Quite funny!!

I, for one, do not mind getting old (despite that fact that I do not always advance gracefully), as it absolutely beats the alternative!!   ;D

McDonald's never came in Styrofoam containers.

I remember a time, when you stood at the window and ordered outside. There was no inside dining area !!  :) I think Buffalo still has one of the original stores still standing, unless they knocked it down

Thanks for the memories !!!   :)

I was sitting in the dentist's chair on Monday for a checkup and cleaning thinking the same thing.  I told the hygienist (who's a few years older than me) "you know you're old when you know the words to all these songs".  That office has some Muzak channel playing instrumental versions of songs that were popular in the '70's to mid '80's!

On a semi-related note... a friend's daughter was over at our house a couple of years ago - she was about 20 at the time.  She saw the rotary phone in the living room and pointed to it and said "I've seen one of those before.  Grandma used to have one".  Another things 'kids' don't know about are records, which are achievements, not music sources.  They've not heard of LP's, either.  Rotary-knob televisions are another 'novelty' item for them.  Damn I feel old now!  The good thing is that I can still appreciate some of the old stuff... like records, but I never did like rotary or pulse-dial phones or TV's with knobs!

Rotary-knob televisions are another 'novelty' item for them.

Anyone remember getting yelled at -- or worse -- for spinning the rotary knob too fast, so instead of the "clunk-clunk-clunk" there was a soothing "zipping" sound? And what about when the knob finally did break -- more yelling and definitely worse -- and the pliers were needed to change the channel? Oh, and don't forget UHF and VHF.

Yes Tim...It was my job to change the channel on this huge, incredibly heavy Magnavox black and white in the livingroom...It took 4 men to carry it in on delivery, like a casket. :D

There were only the three major channels- 2,4, and 7- In New York they were CBS, NBC and ABC, still are of course...Then there were channels for reruns and movies- 5, 9 (Mets games before cable) and 11 and public TV- channel 13- still a valued station.

My mother never liked the way I changed stations- I was paranoid to get up- it was either too fast, too slow, too heavy handed, not decisive enough, going back and forth, switching too often- always something wrong of course...Ah old TV's...The family gathered around, much as they did earlier in the century around the radio...And it was 60 minutes, Ed Sullivan, Red Skeleton, Carol Burnett, Perry Mason, etc...Good times.

Jody  :)

The corded phone when we use to have a long cord that would reach all over the house. Now the cordless phone.

The IBM green screen computer. When you had to make programs to work like F10.

Black and White TVs without the remote and you could only get 3 channels.

I just donated the last of the rotary dial TVs I had to a charity....it was a 13 in  Magnavox...no remote and only had the 13 basic channels......hated to part with it but just had to let go....I still have at least one rotary phone in the garage  and a "princess" phone under my desk for emergencies when the power goes out and my wireless phones wont work....

I actually remember when we got one of the first TVs .....a Philco  in the early 50"s....it was a piece of furniture with a lift up top that was actually a mirror...the TV was in the cabinet below and reflected up into the mirror..all the neighbors came to watch  " Uncle Miltie"....

too sad to think I can remember that stuff but cant' find my car keys.....

Don't forget 8 track tapes - my favorite was a Barry Manilow live or something like that.

Going back just a few years more my aunt had a party line phone line.  Nothing like listening to your neighbors coversations.

And about those old TV's,  I have a Sony that is over 20 years old that has been passed around between people making me the 4th owner.  It has lasted much longer than the TV i bought 4 years ago that went out in less than 2.5 years.

My ex and I used to have an original regrigerator from late 1950's. It only ever had one owner before us and was in mint condtion. It was cream with lovely curved edges. Inside, it was luxurious, with a 'breakfast bar' concealing behind its clear saloon doors labelled storage areas/containers for bacon, eggs, juice and milk. Every month or so you had to defrost the freezer or it would freeze over and the door freeze shut.

We lent it to the Historic Houses Trust at one point so they could use it in an exhibition. He kept it when we broke up and it still works like a charm. It weighs an absolute tonne and is all but impossible to move.

:D  I think we always had a pair of pliers to turn the TV channels, when we were kids. And when we ground down the metal stem, it was time to go to the used appliance store , and get another Set ! Remember when Remote controls actually made loud clicking noises.  :)

I love both you guys ( Tim, Ford)  I have a cell phone but I leave it in the car and turned off...If I need to use it I turn it on and call......I have a "scary" message on my telephone that threatens Federal  action to anyone who is calling and is not a personal friend or has been invited to call....I feel absolutely no "need" to respond instantly to some one else idle chatter while they sit in traffic or are on their way someplace and are bored.....

we need to start a Privacy crusade...ban cell phone chatter!!!!!!  start by just not answering..better yet turn it off.....
