Unhooking Up
« on: March 06, 2007, 10:07:03 pm »
http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/17453367/

In between a lot of useless or over regurgitated fluff that NBC calls news a piece came on about the so called "new trend " of unhooking up. This is where young women have casual sex with guys. Two women, one older and a younger one were tauting their new books on the subject.

First of back in the 80's we called them "fuck buddies" so I wonder when these people decided to take their heads out of the sand. But in the usual effort to promote either religion or good moral values Meredith kept going on about how this so called culture isn't empowering women, but leading them to emotionally mature.

As this seemed to be the dominant result I kept wondering why they don't to a piece on gay men whom society has forced this culture on.  Since society makes it almost hazardous to have a commit ed relationship among gays, I would love to see if there is any correlation between having the stigma of living a shadowedlife, and depression, substance abuse, emotional immaturity, and reckless/ unsafe sex.

Yeah, I saw that bullshit too Johnny.
For the record, I still see it as "fuck buddies." But not for this girl. And there is nothing maturing about it, emotionally or otherwise.
Just what you called it in the first place "fluff".

Fuck buddies? Is that a trick who comes back a few times?
So there's a book out there to teach straight women how to be happy having lots of sex.  Yay.  Lucky straight boys.  Now I'm sure there's going to be some long dissertation about how people who have lots of sex with lots of partners are somehow deeply unhappy and the victim of some kind of steaming mass of low self esteem caused by fallen morals.  etc etc etc   It's just not news that there are people making money off of telling other people that there is some new trend out there called a fuck buddy and that it's ok for straight girls to be horny..... even before gay people started realizing that we like to think we have more sex than straight people, women like Xaviera Hollander was writing about being the happy hooker and women like Elizabeth Barrett Browning was writing thinly veiled pornography and living a hedonistic lifestyle.  It's not new.  It's just been re-branded.

Sigh, I miss Doctor Ruth.

Talkin' bout my generation.

I thought it was funny how the Baby Boomer tried to say how innocent and sweet people during her time as a youth were.

I giggled.

Because it's such a load of crap.

Young people having sex and acting like drunken fools.

My God.

The world is clearly going to Hell in a handbasket.

The world is clearly going to Hell in a handbasket.

Isn't it though... because the world was so much better back in the past... everyone was so much more moral, pure pristine, humane, better, happier, better at being unhappy.  It definitely rained harder in the past, the snow was much colder, the sex was much more meaningful, and music was more understandable than today.  Clearly the world is coming to an end.

Incidentally, I read a really good anthology of writing from the last two thousand years of old people complaining about how the world is clearly coming to an end because of the deterioration of morals and art.  By now you'd think it would have hit bottom already.

I actually read some ancient Sumerian sayings that went after the youth of their time and saying how their actions indicated the end of all that was good and noble in the world.

This has been going on for about 5,000 years apparently.

Why we're not yet onto its inherent silliness is rather beyond me.

Because the world IS getting so much worse.  The evidence is clear.   As we write I personally felt its immanent deterioration.  I didn't laugh once at the Daily Show.  It's all over.

Is it really getting worse or are we just hearing about it more thanks to our 24/7 media coverage?
