Fresh Blood from Mosquito
« on: January 04, 2009, 04:28:19 pm »
Hi Im hoping you can offer me some advice -

I was picking roses in a rose garden and a mosquito landed on my arm.  When I swatted it quite a large amount of fresh blood smeared across my arm.

I had a few pricks and scratches on my arms from the rose thorns.

What are the chances that I could be infected if the blood from from a HIV positive person?

I understand that as a rule mosquitoes dont transmit HIV but this blood was wet and fresh and again, quite a lot as the mosquito was huge.

I would like to get tested but Im unsure of the window period due to it being a blood exposure and the chance of HCV coinfection which could effect the window period.

Please let me know - this happened on 23rd October 2008.

Read the lessons on transmission. The link can be found in the "Welcome" thread. Read the posting guidelines in the same thread. What does a thorn have to do with a Mosquito except that HIV nor HCV is transmitted that way?

I dont understand what you mean Rod - what does a thorn have to do with a mosquito?

I had broken skin from thorns and squashed a mozzie and fresh blood onto my skin.

Can you please advise?

At no time were you ever exposed to HIV or HCV. HIV is not transmitted by Mosquitos or thorns. As you were told in the previous post, read the lessons on transmission.

Jen,

What century are you living in? It's been an established fact for years now that you cannot get hiv from a mosquito.

Yes I realise that mosquito bites dont transmit HIV but the fact that the mosquito was squashed and produced a significant amount of wet fresh blood combined with the fact that I had scratches on my skin from the roses - isnt this a little different?

If not I dont understand why and that is why I am asking for help.

No it doesn't make a difference. Have you read the transmission lessons?

Jenny,

The blood was from the mosquito. Mosquitos do not transmit hiv.

It's that simple.
