Welcome to the "Do I Have HIV?" POZ forum.

This special section of the POZ forum is for individuals who have concerns about whether or not they are HIV positive. Individuals are permitted to post up to three questions or responses in this forum.

Ongoing participation in the "Do I Have HIV?" forum (posting more than three questions or responses) requires a paid subscription, with secure payments made via PayPal.

Hi,

This is indeed a very helpful site. I have a tricky situation. I had a condom break with HIV+ woman; I was put on combivir for 30 days. I started it 43 hrs post exposure. I have had a negative rapid test at 6 weeks post PEP and another negative rapid test at 14 weeks post exposure (9 weeks 4 days post PEP). I will have another test in 2 weeks 3 days. I have a few concerns; I am constantly experiencing neck pain and my neck nodes are a bit swollen. Could this be a sign I have seroconverted? What do you think of my 9 weeks 4 days post PEP negative rapid test? Do I have a chance of dodging the bullet? Are these rapid tests reliable?

With the negatives you have received thus far I definitely would expect you to continue to test negative. The final test should be done at 13 weeks past the completion of PEP.

Bear in mind also that your risk, although real, was relatively low. The condom protected you until it broke. Also, HIV is significantly harder to transmit from female to male than the other way round.

So the odds are strongly in your favor that you will continue to test negative.  And yes, the Rapid test is an approved test.

As for your symptoms, you should discuss them with your doctor. Definitely keep your hands off of your lymph nodes. They are very sensitve to touch and you can create more of problem than you have now by bothering them.

At the end of the day I expect a happy resolution for you to the HIV question.

Hi,

Even the rapid test where they prick a finger is reliable? I am really scared I will test positive at 12 weeks post PEP despite the 9 weeks 4 days negative I have got. Have you come across any one testing negative 9 weeks post PEP and testing positive at 12 weeks post PEP?

Hi,

I think I need to know the answer to this. Why is there a talk of 12 weeks and 13 weeks? Which one is correct? Coming to my case, I had a negative result 9 weeks 4 days post PEP. Now, when exactly should I test to get a conclusive result. I am still a little scared though.

In some countries 12 weeks is used as the testing point and it's 13 in others. Testing at either point after your completion of PEP will give you a reliable result. And I do expect it is going to be negative.

Yes, the fingerprick test is reliable. And no, I have never known anyone to test positive after a negative at 9 weeks and having done PEP.

My mind is playing games with me; it keeps telling me I will test positive after a negative 9 weeks 4 days post PEP (Some 14 weeks post exposure). Is this the start of a mental problem? Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night crying and thinking that I am positive.

What do you think of my test so far? I think I am going crazy. I am presenting my PhD proposal soon and I wonder how I will cope. Help!!!!

Fortunately fears are not facts. And the facts of your situation including your negative thus far indicate you will continue to test negative. Re-read what I have said previously. Your fears and fantasies notwithstanding nothing has changed my expectations for you.

You'll cope just fine with presenting your PhD. Doing that stirs up a lot of anxiety in itself. Take a breath, cut out the drama and get on with it. I expect you to come out of this ok.

Tomorrow is 82 days post PEP. I really feel like I have seroconverted, and I want to confirm that tomorrow. Is it okay to test 82 days post PEP? If I am lucky, and the result is negative, will it be conclusive? I have never suffered like this in my life.

Technically you should wait 13 weeks past PEP. Given your worries about the issue I suggest you wait the additional time to get tested so that you don't leave any room for further doubt when you test negative. And yes, I do expect you to get a happy result.
