Hey,

Here lately i have been forgetting things and was trying to figure out if this could be due to the HIV. Any help with this would be a great help.

How long have you been positive and are you on meds?
There was recently another thread on memory loss due to HIV that you might look up.

I seem to recall mention of higher viral loads possibly affecting the memory.
My memory is still good but I am having language issues.
Words I use every day can just be completely lost.
It could possibly be that I am thinking in two languages or it is the HIV... Who really knows?

Cheers,
Hoover and Dr T

Hello Anthony,

Yes, HIV can affect your memory, and can cause cognitive issues.
But,  I think this question is something that you should be talking to your HIV doctor about, if you haven't already. There are different causes, and different conditions that could be the cause.  Depression for one.

If you bring this to your doctor's attention, and let him know that this is a real concern of yours, perhaps he can schedule neuropsychologic testing.

Ray's comment is wise...

depends where you are on the timeline.

Soon after diagnosis, I was so confused ... Memory and stress disorders were many and impaired my work. but since I have a problem and know there is a solution (sort of), I feel better about it.

I have a urgent need for solving my other problems in life. Thinking of the virus over and over can be counter productive as there are many others things that get into your life much more many times everyday (family, kids, tax return (LOL), ...)
that can be even more annoying.

The memory issues I had are HISTORY

but there were merely post traumatic...

Cheers

Eric

You just don't happen to remember where you read so, right?

Hey Anthony,

HIV can affect your memory.

One of the biggest reservoirs for HIV is the brain and spinal cord.  If your symptoms are HIV related starting treatment should improve your symptoms, or switching your combo to include meds that better penetrate the brain and CSF (cerebro spinal fluid) that surrounds the brain and spinal cord - as not all meds reach the brain as well as others.

The other cause could be side effects of Efavirenz if you are taking it.

More info on drug scores - you should aim for a total score of at least 8 - http://img.medscape.com/article/734/573/734573-table-1.jpg

Direct quote from Dr. Howath of Univ Miami med school:  Memory problems can be caused by the direct effects of HIV on the central nervous system

Or you could just google HIV and Memory problems.

Right?

Right?

That's more like it.  You can bet that the OP will appreciate the link to actual research.  That was the intention behind my question, Bug.
