Norvir Storage
« on: May 28, 2008, 11:58:28 am »
On the side of the norvir container it says that they can be kept for up to 30 days at room temperature.  Say they're kept at room temperature for a week, and then put in the fridge, will they be ok from then on, or will they still have to be used within 30 days because of the amount of time they've been at room temperature?

I would think it would still be fine, but frankly if you're that worried your better off asking a licensed pharmacist this question.

I know I only throw them in the fridge on super hot days as my apt has no A/C and can get up to 80 degrees

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think London's question is specifically about bringing the med to room temperature and then putting it back in the refrigerator, no?  It's obvious from his first post that he realizes it's OK at room temperature for 30 days.

His question is more along the lines of refreezing thawed meat.

Anyway, I've done what he's asking and nothing untoward occurred.

Yeah you're right Philly.  Something family related has come up and I may be away from home for a while.  The family I'll be staying with don't know of my status and now is really not the best time to bring it up.  I just wasn't sure if, by leaving it unrefrigerated for so long, it would start some kind of chemical reaction that would mean it would have to be used within 30 days, even if it was put back in the fridge within the 30 day period.

I imagine it will be ok but I wasn't too sure and I can't find anything on the net one way or another really.  Which hopefully means it isn't an issue.

If it's just a limited period visit, could you perhaps just count out what you need plus a few extra and leave the rest at home in the refrigerator?

I've done the trick of taking my 3 month supply of meds out of the fridge for a week and then resuming with no issues.  Granted, I haven't asked a professional but they have continued to work for me.

My understanding of why Norvir needs to be protected from heat or long-term room temperature is because the capsule formulation contains castor oil, which like many cooking oils, spoils over time.

The 30 day recommendation is probably conservative.  I use olive oil that's been at room temperature for much longer than that.  Then again, cooking oils do go rancid over time.

But to your exact question, I would think putting it back in the frig doesn't restart the clock.  The oil is always aging, and it ages much slower in colder temps.  Cooling it won't reverse any of the previous aging.

Does this make sense?

Peter

Yeah I understand it won't reverse.  What im basically asking is...say there are 70 capsules in the container and they're unrefrigerated for a week or two.  When they go back in the fridge, are the remaining capsules all going to be ok or will they only be good for a few more weeks?

Putting them back in the frig would be like almost stopping their decay clock, so they should be fine (again, like all meds, they will continue to decay slowly over time, even in the frig -- thus the expiration date on the bottle).
