Title: How to combat bronchitis?
Post by: LES Jake on November 30, 2011, 01:06:13 pm
Hey all: Now that winter is upon us, my colds tend to turn to bronchitis. I work as a freelancer and if I don't work I don't make money. Today is Wednesday and I haven't worked this week. Any advice on how to keep from getting bronchitis and how to get over it quickly?

Thanks to all!
LES Jake

Sadly no , apart from the obvious about smoking and healthy diet ,plenty off sunlight if pos  , vit c  however it amazes me how many people do not get a flu shot.

I do know that I often get a cold if I am subjected to air -con. I hate hotel rooms with closed windows much prefer 12 hours on a train to 2 hours flying, but I think these are personal tics and would never put them forward as anything else.

Good luck with the winter.

p.s. welcome to the forums.

Hi Jake, I often get bronchitis once a year and have since I was a kid. Since I get it often I can tell at an early state when it's coming on and different from just a cold, so as soon as I feel like that and before massive amounts of fluid drain into my lungs I buy some Mucinex D (or a generic form of the same thing, just look at the ingredients). You want something that is a combination of guaifenesin (and expectorant) and pseudoephedrine (a decongestant). If you've already developed a hacking cough at this point do not buy a cough syrup that also has these two ingredients in them, as one of them can raise your blood pressure, so doubling up on the dosing is asking for trouble. Any good pharmacy actually should tell you this when you're buying it at one time, at least if you at the pharmacy counter as opposed to the front cashier like at a RiteAid.

If you know your body's signs and start this treatment early when you first feel bronchitis you probably won't miss time from work. Actually if you feel so bad you're missing work are you making sure it's not something worse like strep throat? What kind of temperature have you had. With bronchitis I only get a lowish temperature and only during the first day or two, not a high temperature. Strep gives me a very high temperature and definitely makes you bed ridden.

I use MissP's suggestion..

...I use..Walmart..Mucus Relief...it's in a big, BIG bottle...since my bout of bronchial pneumonia, I use it religiously throughout the winter.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Day before last I was going thru the kleenex. Going back to work today. Not quite at full strength but good enough to go to work.

I will stop and get guaifenesin (and expectorant) and pseudoephedrine (a decongestant).

Have a great Thursday.

Jake
