Impact of Exercise?
« on: October 08, 2009, 03:56:24 pm »
This might be a great big "duh!", but I've noticed on my combo....

Reyataz, Truvada, Norvir,

That when I'm not getting exercise, in this case because I was sick, that I have a side effect that I notice, which in this case is a buzzing, apha state feeling in / around my forehead.

It hasn't effected me when I needed to do something, but when I'm relaxing, its more noticeable. It doesn't really bother me, it more akin to being slightly buzzed. But after just a couple of sessions in the gym, it has been less noticeable.

Naturally my energy level also improves dramatically, and we all know the good things about exercise. But at least this provides extra motivation.

I know we talk about exercise, diet and not smoking/drinking. But anyone else care to comment on their experience with exercise and side effects?

For what its worth, I had all kinds of buzzy feelings when I started HAART.  A fair amount of this subsided after I went off Sustiva. But still I think the body/mind needs to adjust to this regime. I notice a lot more when i am sitting around.  In my first months on HAART, I only felt 100 my "old self" when exercising.

I think exercise is crucial for one's well being if one has HIV. It sounds obvious, as you said when you started the thread, it might seem like  a great big "duh" but some people might need to hear it again and again for it to sink in.

I have exercised all my life and it has always been important to me but now that I have HIV I definitely notice more energy and help with symptoms. For example, I occasionally have experienced slight discomfort on the soles of my feet, not sure what it is, maybe the beginnings of slight neuropathy or maybe slight loss of fat but when I go to the gym, and for days and days afterward, it totally goes away. Maybe it has to do with blood circulation and working out helps get the blood flowing. I just know I feel great when I exercise and I also feel like a normal person, not someone who is supposed to be sick.

My blood pressure is always normal and last time I was at the doctor's, the PA who took the BP asked me if I exercise, since my blood pressure was so good.

Exercise gives me more energy and has always been  part of my lifestyle.I feel crap when I don't do it. Like Inch my blood pressre is always normal.May I add that I have a hernia between the 4th and 5th lumbars that was diagnosed in about 2000 and also arthritis which was diagnosed in 1986  in the cervical region .They don't bother me at all now but I went through hell at the beginning when they manifested themselves. The doctor told me to do passive exercise but I like step and spinning.I swear that exercise is the reason I get no pain , it also gives you flexibility and strengthens your musles. In fact I don't understand how people can go through life without working out .Oh nearly forgot ! the only
buzz I get is from doing exercise.

i agree.  I just came back from the gym..  I have been back and forth with gym for over a 12 years.  did it for 4 years 5x week.   running and lifting.     Got away from it for the next 7 years, except for some occasional months on.   Now i am back on for the past 3 or 4 months.   I have gained much needed weight,   feel better, mentally and physically.  my back disc issues don't hurt.   I have done the bike and the elipitus machine.   still affraid to run.   everytime i do that my back hurts..  i don't want to end up on pain meds again.  Once i get stronger, i will try the running again...  It is amazing how much stronger i have goten in just a few months.

We are both, anxiously waiting for the weather down here in Florida to start cooling down.

We love getting on the Pinellas trail, and riding the bike, but it's still too darn hot right now.

We did our two mile walk last weekend,( as we usually try to do do) but the heat and  the humidity were just too much. I was soaking wet!   Just looking forward to it cooling down and getting more outside activity.

I've never had any real terrible side effects with the meds.  I have  Neuropathy,  but I try not to let that slow me down.  But on the days , when I am just feeling worn out, or the neuropathy is a little too much, I am not going to push myself.

I have a strong 1 hr workout 2x a week with a trainer.  And I was running 4 miles 2x a week until it got cold....don't want to lose that ability.

Even when I don't want to go, without fail I feel better afterwards.  It is an important part of getting to feeling good about myself again.

I noticed that my side effects got much better with exercise.  No matter what I was suffering--nausea, light-headedness, fatique--it all seemed to disappear after a good run.
