God, no. Never watching that again.

Best of luck with the movie though.

I tried watching that last week. I found it to be a slow story line. Personally, I felt it was not well made. I did like "And the band played on" though.
I have not seen Philadelphia since it was in theaters.

What's wrong with a slow story line?

I bet you hate Terrence Mallick's The New World for that same reason?

But as far as Longtime Companion goes like any art you should regard it in the context time-wise that it was made, in this case 1989. If you saw it in a theater when it came out you'd get what I am saying, even moreso if you were in any way integrated in the larger gay community/urban HIV-oriented at the time.

I soooooooo love that movie.  I'm kinda surprised that it doesn't get a little more respect.

I just re-watched it last week :) It's really phenomenal -- it runs over you like a gentle stream of water. It's one reason I need to cough up for a blu-ray player, because it must look really good in that format.

A lot of critics re-assessed the movie when they did their end-of-the-decade reviews. And I will admit that the first time I saw it I didn't wholly get it, but the 2nd time I did. I think I've seen it five times now and each time it only gets better.

Thanks Miss P. for the understanding.  I don't watch most of these movies any more.  Living them once was quite enough.

It's like watching a poem.  And Q'orianka Kilcher as Pocahantas is the embodiment of b.e.a.u.t.y.

Anyone who enjoys well-made, poetic, and beautiful films needs to watch this.  Another recommendation is Wong Kar-wai's In the Mood for Love.  To this date it is still one of my top ten films ever made.  It has minimal dialogues, amazing images (the dresses that Maggie Cheung wears throughout the movie are to die for), and one lovely yet very sad story to tell.  It's like a cinematic symphony.  The ending always manages to bring this here queen to tears.

Wasn't a good idea for me to watch it within a week of diagnosis.

A very touching and moving movie though, even if a tad dated.

Not a movie, but nothing tops Angels in America, in my opinion.

Watching it is difficult.   Living it was WAY more so.

For those who may not know, in those days we were relegated to an AIDS Ward or a specific section of a floor, in hospitals.   Let's hear it for all of us who "served time" in an AIDS ward and are alive to tell about it!  Woo hoo !  ;D

As for Philadelphia, its big Hollywood, quite luxe, and a mixed bag.  Watch it in a double feature with the underground screed The Living End (Gregg Araki) which came out about the same time. Polar opposite style.

Braindead Sound Machine reflects my feelings about HIV/AIDS at the time better than Maria Callas.  Might argue reflects MOST peoples experience at that time better....

(But it is Maria Callas and it is Jonathan Demme so how bad can it be? Just a bit too schmaltzy treacly, that's all.)

By the time that movie got out, when I was a teenager, I thought that I won't HIV enter in my life.

Little did I know, oh yeah. I'll never watch it again, brings me too many memories and depress me.

I haven't seen The New World. Maybe it was the heavy emphasis of the gay lifestyle that didn't appeal to me. I cannot identify with that. I haven't seen Philedelphia since i was diagnosed, but I dixd watcb it when it came out in the theater..I really enjoyed that movie......I want to see it again, but cannot find it as it is not available on netflix

I'm confused.  Are you saying that The New World deals with this so-called "gay lifestyle" (quelle horreur!!!) that you mentioned?   Or are you referring to Longtime Companion?

He looked good in it, but Christian Bale looked even better.

Speaking of hotness in Terrence Malick work, Bale is being paired with Ryan Gosling in an as yet untitled project. Natalie Portman, Rooney Mara and Cate Blanchett are also listed at imdb.com as being in it.

Actually Bale, Portman and Blanchett are doing two simultaneous project with Malick, as they're also to be in something called "Knight of Cups"

Well I don't think of Portman or Blanchett as throwing off much heat so I guess Mara will be the lucky girl getting all the attention.  Portman, maybe...  Is she hasn't got all royal with her oscar and shit.

I was referring to Longtime Companion. I apologize if I offended anyone, bad choice of words. I was just unimpressed with the movie. Maybe I had the wrong expectation when I watched it. Not everyone is going to like or dislike any film.
I did enjoy And The Band Played On, however. I like documentary style movies, which that was one.
