The puppy I hope to adopt
« on: August 20, 2006, 04:52:03 pm »
Eight-month labrador/coon hound mix. Goes by the name Baraboo. What do y'all think? Jay

Her finely-touched spirit had still its fine issues, though they were not widely visible. Her full nature, like that river of which Cyrus broke the strength, spent itself in channels which had no great name on the earth. But the effect of her being on those around her was incalculably diffusive: for the growing good of the world is partly dependent on unhistoric acts; and that things are not so ill with you and me as they might have been, is half owing to the number who lived faithfully a hidden life, and rest in unvisited tombs.

George Eliot, Middlemarch, final paragraph

The puppy you hope to adopt....

.....needs a yard
.....needs lot of attention
.....will be around for 15 years.
.....will need a good vet.
.....cannot be away from you while you are at school all day as it is a larger pet.
.....will crap a lot and you will have to pick it up.

Did I say it will need lots of attention?

CalvinC has raised some decent points. I had a friend who lived in a beautiful, but rather small apartment in midtown Atlanta. For reasons that continue to mystify me, he adopted a series of increasingly bigger dogs. While he would walk them once a week or so around the park, they invariably grew distressed and restless, and destructive because they were cooped up all day indoors. Sadly, several of these dogs were taken to the pound, or foisted off on unsuspecting strangers via Craigslist.

I think having pets is a terrific thing, obviously :). I would only urge you to make certain that the pet you adopt fits into the life that you have. Promising to make fundamental paradigm changes to accomodate an animal is a tricky situation, and there is little more heartbreaking than having to part with a pet because it isn't getting it's needs met.

However, like CalvinC said, if you have the room, and the energy, and the time, and the willingness to spend over a decade together, then by all means, go for it :)
