Eating laundry detergent and hair follicles
« on: January 12, 2011, 11:25:42 pm »
Wow the reality t.v shows they are coming out with are strange. I was watching TLC earlier and there is a show called My Strange Addiction. The first person they showed, was this 19 year old woman who liked to lick her finger tips then dip it in laundry detergent and then lick it off - also when she washes her hands or showers she likes to lick and eat the soap. The other woman who was also fairly young liked to eat pull her hair out and then eat the follicles - sometimes she likes to rub them against her lips first before eating them.

Then the other day - again on TLC haha I saw a show called Extreme Couponing. It is amazing what people can do with coupons in the U.S. This one guy his bill was $5743.00 and after using his coupons it was $241.00. This lady her bill was $638.64 and after coupons it was $2.64. The one guy had bought so much deodorant they said he had enough to last him for 150 years!! This one lady's garage was full of items - she was an organized hoarder and she made sure to rotate her stock. I think these people should donate their time to the food bank and other charities and do the shopping for them.

Now to find more bad reality t.v to watch haha

My Strange Addiction~  last week's lady loved to eat toilet paper, the unused kind.  I'm not sure I could have watched if it was used. I wonder, do you still have to wipe with toilet paper if you eat toilet paper? ::)

OMG I watched the trailers for the strange addiction soap/follicles show and just couldn't envision watching the show. DID catch a portion of the toilet paper eater show. Holy cow--interesting stuff. What I end up watching on TLC is the Hoarders show. THAT is incredible. This week, there was a man with 3,000 domesticated rats that had completely overtaken his home, bedding, furniture, etc. and his rat hoarding began in response to the unexpected death of his wife. It was quite a moving show. The other person featured, a woman, who hoarded cats and stuff, ended up unable to partake of the services. She was noted as having been one of the most difficult cases to date as it went nowhere.

Eating hair is actually a fairly common OCD attribute.  Rubbing it on the lips and checking the texture is also fairly common.

I had a dog who had a problem with eating tissue paper and then would freak out when he had this doily hanging out of his ass.

Oh SHIAT!!  I rub hair between my lips, checking and enjoying the texture all the while.  I didn't know it was an OCD.  I thought it was called something else.....  wait till my wife hears this.

To be honest, I've struggled with trichotiillomania (hairpulling) on and off since I was about 12. I've done the whole rubbing the follicle on my lips and eating it. Of course, it has to be a specific type of hair, but that's not the point. Its sort of an anxiety relieving thing.

Never have eaten soap though. Seems like a great way to screw up the digestive tract. Not a big fan of stomach aches myself.

I think these shows are interesting in that they expose the majority of society who would never realize the types of things people struggle with to other people's "demons". As long as the show isn't sensationalistic and exploitative, then I think it can be good.

skeeb, buddy, you didn't offend me. I was just sharing to show that things like that aren't necessarily really rare and only something that happens to "someone else", but that you might know someone who deals with an issue like that.

Just wanted to share my perspective, not trying to make anyone feel uncomfortable or imply anyone had said anything offensive. I just read the thread and realized I could contribute, lol.

It's amazing some of the OCD habits people have. I saw a preview for the eating toilet paper one but didn't see the episode - thank god she only ate the unused kind lol.

I have a habit of pulling out my chin hairs and analyzing the follicles - I never ate it but I would pull so much out my chin was bald lol, sometimes I would pluck them out too. I still do it but not as often.

When I am driving I always check to make sure my headlights are on the right setting, my window is all the way up and the doors are locked - always in that order, lots of times I do it without even thinking about it.

Those 3 pretty girls from Orange County... They have no talent, no class and no real reason to be on TV except their father is a wealthy attorney.  They get a lot of air time.

In 1993, I was producing a 30 minute radio talk show in Loz Angeles based on employee/employer issues.  Governor Wilson was a guest, Congressman Mountjoy was a guest many times.  My radio show was a success.

One day, I decided to put Taking Pride In America, The American Workforce on cable TV with hook up to every cable head end between Santa Barbara and Phoenix.  I was ready and had sponsorship.  The air time alone in those days for a 30 minute show, once per week and airing at like 4:AM for 3 months was over $186,000.  Then there is production charges, distribution costs (all at union scale) and you provide a catering company to feed your crew (also union).  A catastrophic earthquake hit the San Fernando Valley after the first episode was taped, we went out of business.

It amazes me at some of the lame shit on TV today and knowing the costs of production 18 years ago while knowing costs have increased in those same 18 years.  What could be worse that that?  The viewing audience...  I live in self imposed isolation, drive into town maybe once each week and seriously, if I was watching reality TV and had any knowledge of the content re: eating laundry detergent or hair or those 3 Orange County rich girls, I would run a hot bath and open my veins because that is socially responsible.   ;D  Have the best day
Michael

I think the hair thing is pretty common. I used to bite the ends of my braids when I wore two, but now that I only wear one I don't do it anymore - probably because I can't reach it anymore. Quite often when I'm watching telly with my hair down, I find myself twirling a patch of it - always the same bit. I guess it beats reaching for another ciggy.

And my ex husband used to bite his beard. He probably still does, but I just don't spend enough time with him these days to notice.

If I lived in an even more tropical climate I could potentially see myself developing a habit of pulling hair off of coconut shells after draining the oil out of them.

This has been a very informative thread. I  had no idea there are follicles at the end of hair that could be eaten. Makes me want to pull out my some of my hair to see. Unforetunately my hair is very short and so I cant pull it out.
I think I shall jut go eat some of my home pickled olives that I myself picked from the olive tree out front and ponder this...I usualluy eat about 20 olives in 1 min.

When I was a young kid walking to school, I used to allow myself a certain number of steps to get there and count my steps.... then when I would run out of steps (based on the number I had allowed myself) I would give myself an extra 10 steps for every hundred I had walked..... talk about OCD....  and for the longest time, in the mornings when I was in the shower, I would say what day of the week it was and the date then what date next Saturday would be, then the following Saturday, and so on and so on..... I used to wonder why I was so tired ---- it was because I was tiring my dayummm brain out with all of that thinking -- counting and figuring out dates...

I finally got over the OCD for the most part --- I still have my moments and in my line of work a certain degree of OCD is actually a positive thing.

As for the addictions - I have stuck to the common ones (drugs, alcohol and sex) --- a TV show of my life might have raised eyebrows back in the 50s, but today it would quickly get cancelled due to low ratings.
