I travelled by train at Christmas and was able to fit clothing for seven days in one piece of luggage, plus a small carry-on. Get it together, sister.

But you don't have to change clothes several times day.  One outfit per day will never work for me.  Not a gay thing, simply not liking to wear anything once I've sweated a little bit. :o  And shoes...oh never mind.

Hey Gang,

Yes, I am still planning to go. I will, of course, be traveling by train. :)

HUGS,

Mark

Train ?  I will have to snoop now  :)

I love trains and it would save a  3 hour drive to the Air Port   :D

I would assume 7 thongs and 7 pairs of heels wouldn't take up much room.

I might be also.   :)  I'm driving to Fort Wayne to visit family and will probably just take the train to Chicago because of parking.  It's quite cheap to take the train that short distance.   Except the damn checked luggage which is about the same cost as the fare.

Looking forward to our exploits.

Don't tell anyone, but there is a gay bar right across from the hotel.

I don't remember ever paying a charge for checking my luggage. Of course, I take one suitcase and one carry on with snacks, meds, condoms, tickets, etc. in it.

How many bags are you bringing and wouldn't laundry service be cheaper? ;)

Mark

Hi everyone! I have submitted the contract to the hotel. However, I have significantly reduced the number of allotted rooms to hopefully reflect a more accurate attendance of this years' AMG.

Once the group is setup in the hotel's reservation system I will post booking instructions. If your attendance is definite, please reserve your room ASAP. I do have a small window (90 days prior to arrival) to release a small percentage of unused rooms back to the hotel.

Thanks
Dennis

Never thought about a train. I may look into that.

I did find out that they do not have a shuttle from the airport to the hotel.  The lady did give me the name of a shuttle company to contact,  don't ask me the name I forget what it is.

I will most likely only be there Friday-Tuesday.  There is a bluesgrass festival in Gettysburg the 11-17 (or something like that), and would like to go there also.

Wonder where the biker bars are?

Well, poop...thought this would be the year to reunite with some folks, and meet some new folks.  Haven't been to an AMG since Montreal (DOH!!!), and since I am now living in Chicago, seemed a no brainer.

Buuuut...we will be in Amsterdam all that week and not returning until Monday, Aug 12th.

We'll shoot for next year.

Just out of curiosity if a lot of people have changed their minds on the dates and times and can no longer make the times we had scheduled perhaps a different time might be in order?

ps: the Wolfmeister positively sucks at doing research ::)

Perhaps I was checking incorrectly when considering a train for Seattle.  It doesn't matter much anyways as the trains out of Fort Wayne to Chicago don't offer checked luggage.

ALSO,

I have no issue changing the dates if it'll accomodate more people.

Alright everyone. I posted the dates on January 24th! Shortly thereafter I asked for feedback and received none. Now, the day after I submit a signed contract to the hotel with my credit card guarantee members want to chime in with a change of dates? This is not possible at this point.

I have thoroughly went through the time of year thread and there was absolutely no concensus this year. Therefore I worked with the hotel to determine a time of year where rates could be kept low.

I'm sorry if I sound aggravated. But I have a lot on the line to try to supply everyone with a hotel this year.

dennis,

I like the time of year, it will be a nice way to spend a few days in between semesters.   You do a much better job in finding hotels then I would.

Sorry, I can't come this year. I'm having major surgery at the beginning of July and won't be sufficiently healed to attend in time. Also, the cost of the surgery (not covered by insurance) will prohibit attendance. Hope to see you all next year! Have a great time everyone!

Doe's anyone have any idea of what is going on with the AMG?  i haven't heard anything about a hotel being confirmed nor do i see very little activity going on in this thread compared to the way it was last year and the year before

Is this happening this year? if so, then great, August is not that far away at this point, so it would be nice to know either way so I can plan.

OK, train reservations have been made!

It is $248 round trip from Albuquerque to Chicago. Not bad at all. I even found indoor parking for my car for the entire week for $70 while I am away on my AMG adventure!

So far, so good. Now, next will be the hotel reservations.

Don't you mean the American / US Airways merger?  I doubt they'll make much progress on integrating their routes (and reducing capacity) until later this year.  The DOJ has not approved the merger yet (though it is likely just a rubber stamp).

American and United likely have the DFW - Chicago market locked up anyway.  You could always fly on Southwest to Chicago Midway. :)

I'm about to pull the trigger on a ticket from Austin to Chicago.

Midway Airport would be my choice because the train from midway is much less fuss to get to the hotel than from O'Hare ... much less trouble and time .

And you folks that are scared of public transportation , don't be . If you take the train from midway its a straight shot to the loop and all you need to know is the closest stop to the hotel . It will save you a least $25 in cab fare .

I originally was going to say that I was going to Florida to see Grandma instead of going to Chicago.  But then that changed today.

I had a job interview today at a grocery store and was offered the job.  It has it down sides one being that it is 50 cents an hour less, the other is not being able to go to Chicago or Florida.  :'(

The upside is that after one year I get vacation so next year is a definite.  :)

just thought a little bump here might get some excitement going on Chicago.

we are looking forward to meeting everyone that seems to be on board!

it will be a bit surreal seeing as though this is our first time. (aka. AMG virgins)

can't wait to meet you all in person. :)

I've not decided yet if I'm flying or driving.  We're driving to Chi Town in the beginning of May.  That'll help decide if I really want to make that trip alone.  Also debating on taking my mother to visit her sister in Fort Wayne and just taking the bus from there...choices, choices!

Hey Mitch, I hope you and other folks do get to do AMG'13 in Chicago and enjoy all the wonderful times I have had over the years with a great bunch of people.  I would have loved to meet you and your partner, I believe you live in CT maybe we can hook up one of these days.  I hope to get back on the horse for 2014 for sure.

It seems that there is enough consensus and enough people who have agreed to go.

Rock on AMG's.

I haven't forgotten you guys.  I still have a major work conflict on Saturday smack dab in the middle of AMG.  I have been checking airfares and it looks like for $230 roundtrip I could leave Chicago early Saturday morning (7:30 ORD) and get to Louisville in time for my obligation.  I could possibly get a 4:30 flight back that afternoon or more realistically (and less of a white knuckle ride) at 6:30 pm and arriving an hour later in Chicago.  This way I can arrive Thursday afternoon and depart for home on Tuesday.  Before I commit to this additional expense, I need to be sure that we schedule the memorial service for Sunday rather than Saturday.  I assume the M&G is Friday, but if it is Saturday I can arrive fashionably late.

Organizers...would this be OK (primarily my request to have Memorial anytime on Sunday.)  I hate to miss whatever happens on Saturday, but I will be back in the early evening (wait for me!!)

I don't know how long the tickets for the Saturday up and back will stay at $230 so a quick response will be appreciated.  I REALLY want to come to AMG and this is the only way I can make it work this year.

Gary

P.S.  Vacation in Las Vegas next week (Tuesday through Saturday)  Everytime I look at the Stratosphere (how can you miss it--tallest building in town) I think of our alternate AMG there, especially our jumpers!  I will toast you all (and perhaps even post in the forum) when on the Strip.

Gary,

I don't see any problem at all with having the Memorial Service on a Sunday, especially since we haven't really started the planning on it yet.

and of course, what would a Memorial Service be without our beloved Gary at the helm  ;)

I would say go ahead and plan your business for Saturday.

I'll holler at Dennis and Phil and advise them of this as well.

I am in Chicago for business today through Thursday.  I made a brief stop at the Inn of Chicago while I was downtown and want to report the location is great!  There is a 7-11 directly across the street, numerous restaurants all within walking distance and representing a variety of cuisines and price ranges.  Very close to the great shopping and vistas on the Magnificent Mile.  It appears to be about four blocks from mass transit trains which go everywhere including the major airports.  A car is completely impractical in this part of town.  I will be finalizing my reservation this week I hope.  I will need to fly back to Louisville early Saturday morning and will return around dinner time Saturday evening.  Given how slowly we organize the evening meal, you will no doubt still be dawdling at the hotel when I get back...fine by me.

Anyone sitting on the fence... this is easily worth the money and you will most assuredly have the time of your life.  Looking forward to seeing everyone again and making some new friends.

A little behind the times......   I have booked my room.  I will be arriving on Thursday evening, 8/8 leaving Monday afternoon 8/12.  Shorter stay than usual, but it's all I could do to get away from work for this period.

Looking forward to seeing everyone and visiting Chicago -- I was last here when I was 11 years old.

I have managed to "reactivate" this thread...nice to see you all posting again.  Looking forward to August.  Last day in Chicago tomorrow (Thursday) although it will be much more fun (and less work!) with you all.

We took a Chicago River tour today that involved an hour guided tour of the fabulous architecture.  Well worth it...and would be super fun as a group.  Now....just don't do that on Saturday when I am not there!

We haven't booked anything yet but I did check into the flight.
Still kinda pricey as it is early but will book the room before the JUNE 8TH DEADLINE for Dennis!
