Possible HIV exposure
« on: December 21, 2012, 09:45:55 am »
So, 2 weeks ago I had protected sex with a CSW worker at a strip club/brothel. During the act, I felt the condom broke and I immediately pulled out. The exposure was probably for 3-4 seconds and also, I am uncircumcised. I am very afraid as I am living abroad in a country that CSW is illegal. I also, asked her about her HIV status and she said she gets tested regularly (and negative); however, I don't trust her. I am also, married and my wife is back home. I feel a bit guilty for doing this and have never cheated on my wife before coming here. My wife is expected to be here shortly and I will try to use protected with her until I know my status. Please help....

Take comfort in knowing that your risk from the condom breaking is a very low level one. Until it broke you were protected. HIV is much harder to transmit from female to male than the other way around if it is present. And we're talking about a single and very brief instance. All of which combines to have me expect you will test negative.

You can do a test initially at 6 weeks after the event. Assuming you test negative that is a strong indication you will continue to test negative at 3 months for a conclusive result.

I've never known of a case of transmission to occur from a single instance of a condom breaking.

I expect you to come out of this ok.

Good luck with your test(s).

HIV is certainly character-building. It's made me see all of the shallow things we cling to, like ego and vanity. Of course, I'd rather have a few more T-cells and a little less character. Randy Shilts
