Kaletra and Truvada
« on: December 02, 2006, 04:38:51 pm »
Just started taking the Kaletra, I'm on my second day. Thirty minutes after taking the Kaletra I get severe stomach cramps, nauseated, a headache, diarrhea and insomnia. How long should I expect these side effects to go on?

For me the head issues lasted a week or two and the diarrhea for about a month.  The insomnia is still a problem and I've been on it for a year and a half.  I take melatonin to help get me to sleep and take a low does of amitriptyline to help me stay asleep.  It works out pretty well.

Some people say the Tenofovir in Truvada is the culprit for insomnia, so at least try taking that in the AM (if you're not already).  I eventually switched to Epzicom but my sleep issue still persist.  I am switching to Prezista in January so hopefully that'll solve it to get off the sleep aids.  I know Jack also had the same issues with Kaletra.  With all the chemicals it's a crapshoot figuring out the true culprit but from my personal experience it's probably the Kaletra.

Ah, yes....aren't these side effects fun?  All signs you are experiencing a HAART attack.  My doctors were really resistant to listening to my woes about the Kaletra.  They seemed rather adamant that it was most likely the Combivir that was causing the problems.  Heck, I have no doubt they both could have been contributing to some degree, but my internal voice told me it was really the Kaletra.  I had the old formula.  I would get sick to my stomach just seeing the bottle when I opened the fridge.  I had no such response to seeing the Combivir bottle.  Likewise, holding the pills in my hand caused a response for Kaltera and not Combivir.  They swore it was all in my head (and it really, really irks me when a committee of all negative people sing that carol to me in unison).  I say:  A body knows what it knows.

Anyway, the worst went from midway through the first week til midway through the third...except for the dreaded D.  That resurfaces to this day from time to time.  It was a constant, however, for about two months or so for me.  Immodium, 2 tabs at once every two days, did the trick with that one.  Hope for the best for you, Rod!

i haven't had any side effects from this combo yet and i've been on it for 12 weeks so far. i'm assuming your taking the tablets instead of the capsules. i heard those are better on the tummy. i also take 2 kaleta in the AM and 2 in the PM. I wonder if that helps curb the side effects... still waiting for undetectable though. My vl was at 117 today and when i started it was at 75,000. t cells still unchanged. guess we got to be pateint with that. I also don't drink much alcohol. I hear that can mess with your stomach two when on this combo. it will get better.
diagnosed 03/08/05
reluctantly started my first combo (Kaletra/Truvada) on 09/28/06 cause my tcells were dropping and vl increasing.
01/26/07 - undetectable!
12/01/08 - started new combo because of problems with Kaletra. Now on Truvada/Isentress.
Still undetectable. :)

Hi Rod,
Have you talked to your doctor about the side effects? There are nausea meds that can help, Imodium can help with the diarrhea, and sleeping aids that can help.

I didn't like the idea of taking one more pill, but I looked at taking them for a short term to help get over the side effects.

Christine, it wouldn't be so bad if I wasn't already taking all those meds. I guess I need a but plug. The side effects are easing up. Not getting the stomache and headaches like I was getting. The diarrhea is finally going away. Now if my Histo meds would start working, I thing I could live with this.

Rod,

hope you are feeling better.

As I am to embark on the Kaletra train I was wondering: do the effects last the whole day or do they subside after a while? Also, any tips for getting rid of the nausea? (a butt plug won't help there I know, but I will keep it as an option anyway ;D ;D).

thanks,

Pat

People react to different treatments in different ways.  My self when I was first diagnosed I went on Kaletra and Combiver that was fine but to many pills I felt.
Then they came out with Truvada and have been on that for about a year now and it is working well with me.
I have found a diet when taking the pills that reduces the side-effects.

I always make sure that I have a full stomach and drink lots of water throughout the day.

That is good for any regimen that does not require taking the meds on an empty stomach.  Helps it to absorb faster!!!!

Rod,

I've been on Kaletra and Truvada since Oct 1 2006 and although I still have my days it will get better. I take compazine for the nausea and lonox for the diarrhea.

Rod,

I've been on Epzicom & Kaletra for three months now, my first combo. With Epzicom, I don't have any problems. It's Kaletra which causes some trouble. It's been better since the beginning, and this is what I do in addition to reduce Kaletra side effects:

1) My doc recommends to take the pills together with some fatty snack. However, as Kaletra has quite an impact on my lipo levels, I'm not having butter or margarine with it, but half an avocado with some splashes of lemon juice.
2) For the prevention of Kaletra induced diarrhea, I found that calcium (2 x 500 mg or 1 x 1000 mg) helped me a lot. It's not quite as effective as Imodium, but possibly worth trying.
3) Real liquorice is what I chew when the tummy goes rumbly.

Hope this is of some help to you! :)
