Welcome to Do I Have HIV?

Welcome to the "Do I Have HIV?" POZ forum.

This special section of the POZ forum is for individuals who have concerns about whether or not they are HIV positive. Individuals are permitted to post up to three questions or responses in this forum.

Ongoing participation in the "Do I Have HIV?" forum (posting more than three questions or responses) requires a paid subscription, with secure payments made via PayPal.

A seven-day subscription is $9.99, a 30-day subscription is $14.99 and a 90-day subscription is $24.99.

Anyone who needs to post more than three messages in the "Do I Have HIV?" forum -- including past, present and future POZ Forums members -- will need to subscribe, with secure payments made via PayPal.

When u receive a positive result from a hiv test is there any way of telling when the infection occured?

They can guess at it. It really doesn't matter when you were infected as long as you know and take care of yourself and others.

Sometimes when someone tests positive the person will think back and recall certain things that happened physically which jibe with ARS.

However, not infrequently someone has been HIV positive for sometime without knowing it and having it confirmed by test so often when it occured is not known.

The important things are to 1) practice safer sex consistently to avoid becoming infected and 2) if you test positive to take all the necessary steps to protect your health from then on as well as the health of your partner(s).

I'm wondering what prompts your question.

a friend was told he was only recently infected. how can a doctor tell?

A doctor can only make an educated guess based on what the patient reports about their activities and what the patient's CD4 and viral load numbers are.
