Invisible Paris
« on: January 12, 2007, 06:12:58 pm »
I've been living in this city for more than seventeen years (I visited it several times before that) and, believe it or not, I still cannot say that I "know" Paris! If you're interested about The City of Lights, this could be a good start and an original way of learning something about it.

Ihavehope,

I fell in love with Paname --- just one of the several sobriquets of our city --- in the late 70s.  And everytime I go out, be it at night or during the day, I always find some new attraction, a new bar, restaurant, library and places I never heard of!

And here is an aerial view of The City of Lights, just for you!

Hey Val

I been there 2x and it has been the best time of my life. People think the French are rude but I think they are just care free. They live life with the notion that life is currently going on and don't overwhelm themselves with many silly things us Americans do. They seem more relaxed and content with what they have.

I was most happiest when on the boat in the Sienne overlooking the Eiffel tower was magical. As if I were in a dream.

Did you have the time to leave the city?  I say this because at a 100km distance, and in any direction,  outside of the City of Paris you find numerous world class historical monuments unmatched by any other European capital.
For example, did you go here?

Château de Versailles --- Panoramic view

At just 40min. South-West of Paris you have one of the most impressive cathedrals in France!

I went to Versailles while I was there.  Talk about over the top!  It's so crazy luxurious that I got numb to it while I was there.  Loved the little shops and restaurants that were there, though.   LOVED the train ride in between there and Paris!  I am one of those that gets so thrilled to peek in on 'everyday living' in progress.

I also remember going to the Arc de Triomphe...gosh, the little circle of traffic around the bottom of it was just nuts!

*sigh*...Paris.  I wanna go back right now.

But two other thoughts just sprang to mind:

Heaven help you if you are offended by cigarette smoke.  I halfway expected to see children in strollers smoking there!

Also heaven help you if you are wheelchair bound there.  Unless there are accomodations I didn't see, the main part of the city (being so historical as it was) is not very inviting to anyone with mobility problems.  Getting around on the Metro was exercise with all those stairs.  So much fun, though!

Being a non-smoker myself, I get the message!  I have suffered for so long because of this European problem...! Now, the good news is that starting next month it will be forbidden to smoke in any public places i.e. bars, restaurants and the like.
But, since in France things take a little while to set, the government has allowed bars and restaurants a time frame until the end of the year so they can adjust to the new law.
You know, the French in general do not like changes! And when they are forced to do something they don't like, well, it just takes a little longer than the rest of Europe.  In the end, though, and whenever they put their hearts to it, they do it even better...
As for the mobility problem, new solutions have been brought up through the years.  However, I do agree that it isn't enough.  Far from enough, I'd say!

Yeah.  I'll be honest and say that I did not venture into the newer 'business' part of Paris, so I don't know how accomodations are over there.

As for the smoking thing...I can barely imagine The Queen without all that smoke in it!  And OMG!  That brings back another memory:  that fantastic assembly of Beautiful Men at The Queen in Paris!  France, Germany, Italy, Spain!  Those and so many more all represented!  I will never forget one boy in particular:  Vitali from Italy (I kid you not on that one.)  He was gorgeous...and apparently thought I was also.   :P  We danced together for quite some time in The Queen.  Could not understand anything verbally between us- except that I was 'Tim from USA' and he was....

Vitali from Italy

Ah...the Paris memories just keep coming!

Well, the Queen has until the end of the year "to cut down" on the smoking!  Cigarettes, that is...
Anyway, just to refresh your memories I thought I'd send you this:

The Queen Website------Still one of the best clubs in town!

Do you know that they owe it all to a famous French DJ?  In fact, it was ""Dimitri from Paris"" who start an uproar in town when he decided to create his famous ""Paris is burning"" nights at The Queen.  Why "an uproar?"  Well, history my friend.
This famous sentence was the one Hitler asked over the phone to the General Von Scholstisch, in power during the German occupation.  Hitler knew that the war was lost and decided to punish the French by destroying Paris.
Therefore, he wanted..."" all the bridges of Paris bombarded and not one single monument standing...""! The rest of the story we know and especially we have to be thankful to General Von Scholstich who "loved Paris" and disobeyed Hitlers' orders....  Sorry, for the history.

But, the sentence ""Is Paris burning?"" is quite a sentence for the Parisians.   And The Queen became what it became....

THank you Val for posting the thread and the links with the Paris images. I live in NYC and i like it here but I tell you when I see pictures of Paris or of a beautiful beach my mood changes drastically. I have tears in my eyes coming out. I feel so vulnerable now and I always dreamnt of being in love and walking down the streets of Paris with someone I loved and then going to the South of France for the weekend. I envy you in a good way. Have you been to the South of France lately? I stayed in a small town called Menton in 01' close to the border with Italy.

I have no pics of Vitali!  He was an unexpected treat from our night at The Queen!  Two ships passing...

Well, he was hot enough that my ex was like, "Honey- dance with him!  I'm not gonna begrudge you that one!"

He looked about 90% like Lillo Brancato (from A Bronx Tale).

I meant we were all photographed by people at The Queen.  We were probably viewable on their website for some time.

Well, I guess me and Ihavehope will just have to go to bed without a picture of Vitali.  Anyway, Vitali does sound Ukrainian or Russian, right?  Add some Italian ancestor to that mixture and, gawd, I dare to imagine what comes out!

Ihavehope, you live in a beautiful city yourself, honey!  There  are actually very few cities in  the world that compare to great capitals/cities like New York City, London and Paris in terms of what they offer to its inhabitants in general i.e. places to go out, museums, art showcase, etc.
I really do not take for granted all that Paris offers its residents.

The South of France is indeed a place I like to spend some carefree time especially when all the tourists are gone.  Something very à la mode right now is the region known as Dordogne, in the Southwest.  Just perfect! Actually, there is a British invasion in there right now...

However good you might dare to imagine Vitali...yes, you are probably close with your mental image!

Gosh...this thread has really made me yearn to return to Paris!  Actually, it has made me yearn to go on an all-out european tour!  *sigh*  That trip was before diagnosis.  Unlikely I shall find myself in the financial position to take such a trip again anytime soon.  Almost certainly not in time to catch the eye of any of the Vitali's of the world.
