please help, I need advice
« on: September 10, 2006, 07:55:42 am »
I stupidly had unprotected sex with someone 4 weeks ago, It was very brief (I came to my senses after about 20 seconds) and he didn't ejaculate. I am extremely concerned because around 10 days afterwards I came down with what my doctor diagnosed as a viral infection which lasted for a couple of weeks, I had flu like symptoms and a sore throat with swollen glands. I didn't tell my doctor about the unprotected sex incident, I was too embarrassed I guess...
I am going off my head with worry, when is the soonest I can test and be sure the results are conclusive?

Tully,

You're a bit unclear as to the specifics of this encounter so I'll go out on a limb and presume that you had unprotected anal or vaginal sex with this fellow. Unprotected anal or vaginal sex is a risk for the transmission of HIV. You should know however that HIV is not an easy virus to spread. The likelihood of you being infected from this single incident is not great.

Nevertheless, HIV is not something to guess about and you do need to test at 12-13 weeks from the date of this incident. All sexually active people should have a full STD screen at least twice a year. STD's such as gonorrhoea and chlamydia are far more prevalent and contagious than HIV. If it's been a while since your last full screen or if you've not had one before I recommend you make an appointment with your doctor or local clinic.

Please note that symptoms mean nothing when it comes to diagnosing HIV. Only an antibody test conducted once the window period (!2-13 weeks from the date of a potential exposure) can do that. Please take the time to read our Welcome Thread to learn more about how HIV is and is not transmitted.

Regards,

MtD

Matty,
thanks for the reply, I will get a test at 12 - 13 weeks and a full STD screen. I did read the welcome thread before I posted, but I still needed to post! Everyone on this site was really helpful when my best friend was diagnosed positive 2 years ago ( I should know better than to take risks!).
Thanks again for the reply.

Tully,

I'm glad we've been able to help you. Get the relevant tests done. I expect that you will test negative for HIV at the 12-13 week mark.

Regards,

MtD
