President Obama has formally announced the lifting of the US HIV Travel and Immigration Ban. Obama articulated a range of developments in US HIV policy including the rescinding of the travel ban during a Whitehouse Speech announcing the signing of an extension of the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Bill.

The Bill is named after Ryan White, who was diagnosed with AIDS at 13 in 1984 and died in 1990. The bill provides medical care, medication, and support services to about 500,000, mostly poor, people.

In signing the bill Obama stated:

‘If we want to be the global leader in combating HIV/AIDS, we need to act like it. And that's why, on Monday my administration will publish a final rule that eliminates the travel ban effective just after the New Year’.

‘Congress and President Bush began this process last year, and they ought to be commended for it. We are finishing the job. It's a step that will encourage people to get tested and get treatment, it's a step that will keep families together, and it's a step that will save lives’.

Obama continued by stating almost half of HIV transmissions in the US today occur among African-American heterosexuals and about half among gay men.

The travel ban, imposed 22 years ago, will be lifted in January 2010, according to a final regulation (law) that will be published Monday 2nd November 2009 US time.

Roughly roundabout somewhere in the eighteenth or nineteenth century, Sodomite begat Homosexual out of moral, medical and legal models, bequeathing him Identity, who inbred with Nuclear Family and Industrialism to spawn Homophobia.

Keeps getting better! Finally, like I said in one post, I will make my post-poned visits to friends in the US. I was so scared I'd be turned back at the borders! What a relief!

I hope other countries are going to take suite and ban laws that are so discriminatory against positive people.
Take it a day at a time....and be positive about it too!

The hiv entry ban will be lifted officially on January 4th, but since you have to apply 72 hours in advance (ESTA), the earliest you can enter the USA without any troubles is January 7th 2010.

Happy travels to all.

This is great news and a testament to all the hard working folks who put great effort into ending this infamous travel ban...And even purely selfish folks who don't care about the HIV+ or very much besides making money will have so many more potential travellers to the states.  I think it's safe to say that many of the good folks who live world wide and would not come before will now be making travel plans.

So for all our letters, recommendations on surveys when making political contributions or foot-work advocacy efforts, three cheers to this banning of the ban !

At last I am very pleased to say Good bye to posting meds out beforehand , it will be a relief not to have stomach cramps due to "will I get in " anxiety when visiting US, thanks to all those who worked on this.

I am happy to see this finally happening.  The world is changing.

Hopefully South Korea will follow suit; it remains the only developed country with an absolute ban for HIV positive travelers.  The other ten will probably never change their stance (glad I visited Russia a couple of times before I became poz, otherwise I might never get to see its beauty).

He won the tickets through a sweepstake organized by the Dutch Aids Organisation.  The organisation had a big wave-off for them at the airport, and was shown on local television.
