Computer software
« on: April 22, 2007, 09:21:41 pm »
I'm supposed to be really smart but today, I don't think so.

I have an old notebook a Compaq Presario w/ Windows 98.  Being the third owner of this little computer, there was a lot of crap on the hard drive that should be removed.  I uninstalled a bunch of crap and that wasn't enough...

Lo and Behold, I found myself in Office Depot this afternoon.  I chose iola DriveScrubber 3.  It only cost a little over 30 bucks and promissed to "Securely Erase Data From Your Hard Drive."  Such a deal!  I installed it ran a system check and found over 60 repairs required to make this computer work correctly.  It worked just fine.

Then it offered to scrub my hard drive and restore files to "Like New".  It completely wiped out my operating system files.  I guess I am not so smart and will never do that again.  Have the best day

What I do is to move the files I want to keep to the new drive, or burn them to DVD. Then I remove the old drive, unscrew and open it, then take a hammer, and hit it hard a hundred times while doing the rain dance and shouting incomprehensible words at it.

That has worked fine so far.

Thanx guys,

I bought a share in a sailboat last week and the Compaq came with.  I was hoping to download the navigation charts so I can find the marina in the fog.  I am about to turn this little notebook into a third anchor.    ;D
Have the best day

I shopped dilligently and bought cheap through a yacht dealer in Alameda.  When I am done with the unknown repairs, I can double my money.  Still have to come up with DMV fees, insurance and find an affordable slip.  It is still at the dealership.  Have the best day

Hi Ray,

I have the disk from an old system but it will not load.  I have a cousin in Monterey who spends a lot of time fixing computers for family and friends.  I will have to stand in line on this because he is working full time and building a new house.  Have the best day

For W 98 you need to have a boot fllopy disc (or CD rom) , erase or clean your hard disk ( erase almost all data`s ) and then first to put a boot device in a PC , run it , and then a W98

I tried that and I think the DriveScrubber3 program wiped out everything.  Today a new red window opened saying

"Save to disk feature is disabled
Run Phdisk for information.  FILE: create new.
PARTITION: consult manual.
Hit any key to exit."

Hitting any key does not do anything

ALT/Control/Delete- "Invalid system disk replace the disk, and then press any key"

Doing that it says-
"Invalid system disk, Replace the disk, and then press any key."

----Repeat----

"Invalid system disk
Replace the disk, and then press any key"

And then nothing happens, you can hear it trying to do something but the cursor just blinks.

My boat partner is a little ticked off because I did tell him the former boat/computer owners were sexual swingers man/woman and he wanted to read their email.  There  was hundreds of "hookup", "lets share photos" and all the same.  I didn't want to take the time to read it to him as he never has his reading glasses and I know he can not afford to travel to Maine from San Francisco.  He also wants me to write a letter for him to them to find out if there is anything about "his" boat that the dealer didn't tell him that "he" should know.  I guess they don't teach readin an writin in San Francisco skools.  They sold a boat, we bought it, not enough there to become pen pals over.  The notebook was on that boat and it was a throwaway.  Should have tossed it before spending 30 bucks on DriveScrubber3.  Have the best day

oh dear, it scrubbed too hard! :(  Sounds like it went into late stage dos function, and now it can't recognize the CD... man, that sucks.  And it's fixable.

Unfortunately, I don't remember how.. LOL  a lot of good I am.

I have a friend in Guerneville, who used to be the IT director, and is very proficient.  If you said you were doing it for me, he'd probably not even charge you.  if you're interested, pm me.  :)

The boot program is separated from installation program.
It comes on fllopy or CD.
1.First you have to format your hard-disc.
Then maybe the DriveScrubber3 program has wiped out everything including manufacturers disc data. You have to Google it.There are some programs on the net to fix that.
2.Then you have to create a new partitions
3.And then you install W98

Hi Michael,

You should be able to boot off of an OS installation CD, if you can find one.  What model is your notebook (and how much memory and what processor)?  You may have to enter setup when you first turn it on and set it to boot off of a CD.  If you can't find an installation CD for Windows, I'm sure I have a legit. Win98 with the CD key number you can have.  Better yet, if you have enough processor speed and memory, I can send you a Windows 2000 CD (also legit). Let me know if you need either.

Oh, by the way, I'd ditch that drive scrubber.  Like Joseph said, it scrubbed too hard!

Hey Joseph,

I was married once for 10 days to an MIS manager for a sportswear company.  You could tell how many men Mark (Wagonman) had slept with by noticing how many men were wearing Asics shoes.  I saw him once staggering home from the bar and accidentally hit the turbo boost (instead of the brakes).  He saved me thousands when I moved my company to Seal Beach from Long Beach.  He did the phone system and the main frame all in one weekend and I was up and running by 8:AM on Monday but spent every moment trying to make me jealouse (didn't work).  Last time I saw Wagonman, he was on his knees at Laguna Beach.  He could blow the stars out of the night.  Have the best day

Hey Al,

That red window that showed up yesterday discussed setting up new partitions.  The notebook is a Compaq Presario 1692 and I do not have the manual.  I have a boot disk- it does not work and have a copy of Windows 98 and it doesn't work either.  I think I did let it scrub too hard.  The infor on the box of DriveScrubber 3 said to use it if you were selling or donating a computer because it would remove all personal information.

They say it is good for three usages but after this, I think, I will put it far away in the archive of things to save.  Some people save greeting cards, I save crap.

Hey David,

I would really like that copy of W 2000.  I have it on my PC and really like it... I like it sooo much, I refuse to try DriveScrubber 3 on it.  I will PM my contact info... Much thanks, Have the best day
Michael

Michael,

I am really not that knowledgeable on this, but the way you describe it, makes me believe that you have/had a partitioned C-drive. This means that the operating system was placed on a certain section of the hard drive, and apparently when it got scrubbed, it obviously went to far.

I am not certain on this, but I think you would need a program, such as "partition magic, to reinstall the operating system back onto the hard drive. Perhaps others with more knowledge can comment.

There is a website I use, when I run into problems. you can find it here ;

http://forum.worldstart.com/

You will have to register to ask a question, but they may be able to help you. I have found them helpful on quite a few occasions. You will have to be sure to give them, all your computer specs. But they can be very helpful.

Take care and good luck-----Ray

Find a company that has manufacured your HD , than go to the web site and explain the problem.( just for a program which allow your HD to be formatted ).Because Srub has done it to the bone.

Well, I finally figured it out and all is working.   ;D  First there was a need to block the tires in the driveway, so I used it in the yard untill I found a bigger and better rock.  Then I installed the partitions as Al had said to do (found the instruction online).  Windows 98 is reinstalled as well as the chart software and all is working as hoped.  Much thanx, Have the best day
