AMG 2010 in The Big Easy
« on: August 29, 2009, 09:10:16 am »
Check out this website for MANY things to do in The Big Easy (New Orleans)

http://www.neworleans.com/attractions/101-cool-things-to-do.html

Here is a list of some of the tours that are available through New Orleans tours (with prices listed)

http://www.bigeasytours.us/tours/tourType.cfm?ttid2=1491

There are lots of things not listed on the website such as:
Bourbon Street
Jackson Square
Riverboat rides on the Natchez
The River Walk
The Moon Walk
Constant Street Performers
Hurricane (the drink, not the storm)
Superdome (home of the New Orleans Saints - football game anyone?)
The Cabildo (LA purchase ceremonies conducted here)
Gallier House
Herman Grima House
Chalmette Battle Field (used during war 1812)

Hubby was raised in New Orleans and knows his way around the city.  Most of these attractions are accessible, depending where we stay, by foot, trolley, or city bus.  There is an international airport.  Depending when it is scheduled, Hubby said he was willing to rent a van and pick everyone up from the airport and take them to the hotel.

mmmm...fantasizing about the Beignets and chicory coffee at Cafe du Monde!  yum.  The cemetary tours are fun as is a sail on the Steamboat Natchez

I would rather go to New Orleans than Vegas -- Vegas just seems like a large shopping mall, void of culture.

I haven't attended previous gatherings yet every time I read about them, everyone has a great, fabulous and memorable time....I have a question...my mom and my curious-bi-sexual-lesbian friend are a big part of my life and we've talked before about going to New Orleans.  If AMG happens at New Orleans, is it OK if they attend with me?  I would love for them broaden their minds and experience others living with HIV/AIDS.

Have you been to Vegas?  Shopping mall is one of the last ways I'd choose to describe it.  Void of culture?  I don't really blame you, as I felt the same way when my ex wanted us to go back in '93.  Personally, I've been to both and have no desire to go to NO (though it's been a LONG time since I've been).

Hey, D, stop hijacking my thread!  If you want to talk about Vegas, do it in the Vegas thread.  This thread is about New Orleans. ;D ;) :P (kidding, of course)

Texan, yes they would be more than welcomed.  There are people who attend AMG who are negative (including me).  They come with their partners / friends / family who are poz.  And I promise you that you would ALL have a great time in New Orleans (or vegas..whatever ;))

Oh, don't get me wrong -- I'm a shopaholic without par.  But I don't do enclosed malls.  It's just so suburban.  But if we book at the Bellagio I'll repose by the pool in my Gucci thong to show off my flat lipo ass, and then head off to the spa for a mani and pedi.  Care to tag along?

New Orleans has seedier hustlers and stripper joints.  Vegas is very Chippendales... you know, all the brows are plucked.

Trust me...there are some seedy places to see in Vegas if you are curious.... naturally I would not know about that personally, but some hypothetical friends of mine have told me all about them!  (Robert...are you paying attention?)

Not hijacking....have a long standing love of New Awlins also.... wonderful places to eat, drink, be merry, and oh yes, be seedy!

I'm curious as to how many days one would want to spend in NO.  I don't remember much to do outside the city, if one wants to get away (day trips, etc).

ThanX Mum!  I'd love for you to meet another Mum....sure her baby is much older  ::) but we don't need to get into that....my mom is someone who doesn't know anyone else in her situation and what I mean is, she doesn't know anyone who's child is positive....so for her to relate to another mom...eventhough the age difference is huge....just to know another mom, would mean a lot.  AMG would be a wonderful experience for us.

ThanX...

I'm curious as to how many days one would want to spend in NO.  I don't remember much to do outside the city, if one wants to get away (day trips, etc).

D, tisk, tisk, tisk.  Did you read my post or the check out the links?  There are TONS of things to do and day trips to take.  They range in time from a couple of hours to 5 hours (includes a tour of the city and a boat ride on the Natchez riverboat).  We can even take a boat trip up the swamps to see the cyprus knees, herons, catfish, and gators.  Then there are ghost tours, voodoo tours, cemetary tours (everyone has to be burried above ground or the bodies would float away), wine tastings, jazz brunches...oh, just read the links ;)

Cliff, N.O. is most definately NOT a ghost town.  Hubby has family there and my dad has been working down there (he's a pilot people, get your heads out of the gutter ::)) and everyone has said that N.O. has come back and recovered.  Most of the old buildings along downtown weren't damaged.   The Chalmette battlegrounds are closed, but they are slated to be reopened in the beginning of 2010.

However, if you all are anti-New Orleans, let's just go to Disney ;D

I'm easy on the Big Easy.

It's a great city.  It's certainly not a ghost town.  The French Quarter is the original part of New Orleans and like most old cities, built high on a hill.  It was spared the ravanges of Katrina.

I would like to see the impact of Katrina 5 years after.  I would love to go over to Algiers (it just sounds so romantic) and ride a streetcar named Desire and drive up to Natchez and see all that Spanish Moss dripping from the Live Oak and, of course

My only real concern with N.O. is around when we go.  I've been there, once, in August and have no real desire to go in August ever again!!  It's like a full-time steam bath -- but everyone is dressed!

Of course, IF we were to choose N.O., I would go (even in Aug) just to see all you wonderful people again -- but I wouldn't be pretty!!   :D
