Dave Brubeck died today, aged 91. Tomorrow would have been his 92nd birthday.

Take Five Mr Brubeck, and RIP. You've earned it.

HIV is certainly character-building. It's made me see all of the shallow things we cling to, like ego and vanity. Of course, I'd rather have a few more T-cells and a little less character. Randy Shilts

Wow, Ann!  I planned to post about Dave Bruebeck this evening and then I looged on and saw your entry.  I love his music and especially the high definition sound of Take 5.

Also, watch this clip from the Kennedy Center Honors. Mr. Brubeck looks great. Everybody is catching the beat (love President Obama and First Lady Michelle on the grove 8): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H1jWlpMQW3Y

May Mr. Brubeck rest in peace having had a very full life.

Oscar Neimeyer also just died, aged 104 -- legendary Brazilian modernist architect. Did all of those marvelous structures in Brasilia as well as the UN headquarters in NYC.

Dave was a generous man and of course a wonderful musician. Two or three years ago I had a great time with him profiling him for a New York jazz paper. By that time when he walked out onstage he kinda shuffled, but once he started to play the years fell away and he was still swinging.

By having an integrated group when he pioneered playing jazz concerts on college campuses, he demonstrated courage and determination about equality. He insisted that Eugene Wright "plays with us or we don't play." Back in the 1940s and 1950s mixed races in music and sports only began happening because of the courage and decency of someone like Brubeck.

Thanks for all the great music, Dave. In you we had one of those all-too-rare blendings of a great artist and a helluva decent human being. Love ya, Dave.
